At least two people have been shot at Northern Illinois University, according to information heard Thursday afternoon on a police scanner .

Shortly after 3 p.m., calls started coming over a police scanner about a white, male shooter with a shotgun and pistol.

Reports have said the shooter is down, but an alert on the university's Web site instructed people on campus to take cover.

"There has been a report of a possible gunman on campus. Get to a safe area and take precautions until given the all clear. Avoid the King Commons and all buildings in that vicinity," the alert states.

Rescue crews from surrounding villages and cities, including Maple Park, Burlington, Geneva, Hampshire, Sugar Grove and Kaneville, have been called to the scene.

A university spokeswoman said at 3:10 p.m. she had just heard about the shooting and could not immediately comment on the situation.

My girlfriend was in the Classroom when it happened. Apparently someone shot a shotgun multiple times in to the room, which is a very large lecture hall 400+ seats. She and alot of other students didn't immediately realize what happened, but after the 2nd shot the all started running out of the room.

I was across campus in the engineering building, and managed to get a hold of her. She's really shaken up, and she was hit in the finger by a pellet, but she should be ok.

They have all of the students in one of the large halls in our Student Center for questioning/ medical evals.

Pellet? Bleeding? Unless it was spent, shot would do some nice damage, more or less depending on what he was using.

I'm not even 10 minutes away from where the shooting happened, this is fucked up

waggy, he had a shotgun and a pistol. he's dead now, the cops got him like 20 minutes ago.

but i was in town when it happened. ti pretty much shut down that end of town.

i don't care if its his 1st or 10009099999th.

he is right on the size of the hall (been in it) and the shotguns and medical evals. all dorms now have people to help

For keeping the law abiding unarmed.

yeah it is. i took a few class's at NIU (before transfering to RIT). its actually 2 huge lecture halls. each hold like 400 students.

now i have friends that work on NIU and a few going back.
