As my '89 accord continues to fall apart, although I'm going to try and hang on to it (and probabaly never buy another Honda), I saw a review of the Sentra SE in motortrend, and I gotta say this is a sweet deal.

Its quite cheap (I think around $15k starting), with a 0-60 of 7.9 seconds. This compares quite favorably with a more expensive Honda Civic SI which 0-60's in about 7.2 (a car it would have competition with). For about $1500 you can get a "sport package" which includes tail, nice wheels, sunroof, and added sports tuning. I saw a brand new one in a dealership yesterday and for the price and the power (and nissan isn't a bad company at all), it seems like a damn sweet buy. I think if I was to buy a new car right now this would be it.

Brooks,
Saw one as well at the dealer this week, salesman told me for money it's a great deal. Fully loaded sport package could be had for $15,800. It looks to be a real nice car.

I did some quick calculations on the website and selling my pile of crap - I mean my car, going for a 60 month buy period I could get away with barely more than $200 US a month for a nice car :)

Hate to say it but... look at a new focus or a SVT contour. Also look at the Civic Si again. Try also the Dodge Neon R/T or just neon. Also a v6 stang. Maybe a nissan altima. How about a used mistu. eclipse?

Millenium:

Well I am not so interested with a used car anymore. I was thinking of a used porsche 944 or supra turbo, but I think I hate repairs, its gotta be new.

No offense to anyone here but I would feel personally embarassed to be seen driving a: focus, cavalier, sunfire, neon, saturn. I hate those cars. V6 stang will be more than this car, also cut my ass up on insurance and it won't last as long....altima more expensive!

nfs4 For one thing the pt is more expensive, and although it looks good, it won't be long before everyone and their dog has one (just like with the new VW bugs), then i'll feel like some yuppie robot!

contour svt is out too then, I just got one and it is 439 a month not including insurance so that is a little more than you want to spend. The nissan is a nice car-you will be fine with it

BTW,
I gave my bro-in-law my old Nissan Sentra SE w/256k on it. The car is solid, tune-ups, brake jobs, oil changes and a clutch that's all it's ever needed. Still the original muffler and timing chain, a real good car.

Sh*t moose, not bad! My dad had a '95 maxima (well whichever year they came out with the newish body design and the nice power), and it was a sweet car. Quite cheap for the size and power of it, I really liked it until he rolled it.

the PT Cruiser is a damn nice looking car, to bad it is backordered til December, hehe

Brooks, there wont be many PT cruisers this year. I believe Chrysler is only making 60,000 of them, and they are in extreme shortage

I don't like Sentras.

If your into Japanese name cars, go with either the:

1)Mitsubishi Galant
2)Mazda 626
3)Toyota Corolla

I just picked up my Sentra a month ago.
91 SE-R with 106K miles. Good lord I love this thing. Unfortunately they don't make the SE-R anymore.

If you're looking for other cars in the sentra class (small, foreign, econo, with some pep) Take a look at the protege, and mabey an impreza (i'm not sure if they have anything in-between the base an the 2.5)

Buddha imprezzas are not so cheap though :( My mother picked up an impreza outback sports edition wagon, auto. If it was standard and the sedan version I'd love it, they are a really nice car. I love the feel of their drive and their power ain't bad!

The new Sentra SE actually has the same engine as the old SE-R, and in a 5-speed will provide similar performance with a lot more amenities. I am not sure who Nissan thinks will be buying up all those Altimas!

Definately look into the new Mazda Protege! This has to be the most unrecognized car ever. It is in the same class as the Sentra, but is cheap and better. Consumer reports has rated it #1 for quite a while now and just recently Car and Driver did a 13 car comparison and it got 1st. I think the Sentra got 3rd, the Civic 4th but I'm not sure. They even have a $1500 rebate on it now.

Bah! I'm at the site now, the SE has a mere 122 horsepower. Thats an unhealthy 23 less than the Sentra...whats this things 0-60, prolly about 9 sec..? Certainly it can't be better than very high 8's..

DaimlerChrysler is making 150,000 PT's for the North American market. Their European plant will make 50,000 for the rest of the world.

It was actually about the same as the Sentra. I wish I hadn't thrown away the article, but I know it was in the high 7's, low 8's. Horesepower isn't everything, you have to add weight and gearing in too. It's suppost to be a great engine too, it's basically the miata engine with a few less horses. What they really liked about it was the handling, which they were comparing to the "feel of a BMW.":Q

We took one for a test drive once and it certainly wasn't short on power. (This was the SE model, the base engine and suspension don't compare.)

Well I suppose maybe you're right :) And if motortrend rated it so well it can't be too bad. The price is definitely right anyway, its several K less than a sentra (if you're going for the SE versions)...it doesn't look particularly hot though!

Darn - i just calculated some prices on it, and it turns out that although the base model is so low you have to pay a lot for all the extra parts, whereas with the Sentra SE you get the thing, then buy the sport package for $1500 US and boom u have everything...This isn't that much cheaper...

Really? I thought it was pretty nice looking for an econobox, it has a nice clean, sorta earopean look to it. Definately in comparison to the Sentra...

Brooks,

2000 Mazda Protege EX...My LX only sucks because it has a 1.5L 92HP DOHC 4 banger. The EX comes with the same engine found in the Miata. Can't go wrong by getting that. Just test drive one:)

I just drove by the Nissan dealership and saw "my sentra" again, and then I went into the Mazda dealership and saw their Proteges. Am I missing something? The protege may drive well and be of a competetive price, but as far as looks goes I think the sentra is a lightyear ahead :(
