Nintendo Wii

I am sorry for adding another Wii thread to the mix. However, I am ridiculously angry and the response to this name.

"Let's play with our wii's!"

Ok Ok I get it. It sounds like something else that is used in America. Get over it!

What sent me over the edge was this: Wii-Fi.org A site dedicated into convincing Nintendo to change the name of the console. Come on people.

Reading through this organization's site, I was very appauled at the one-sided view.

"It is with that desire that we're seeking to encourage Nintendo to change the name to something with fewer negative connotations for English speakers."

English speakers. Because this is not an international product. Does "wee" have a negative connotation in the UK? I am not sure, but I am gonna go with no. If this is the case, then is is in fact for Americans.

"The thought of walking into a store and asking "where do you keep the new wee games?" or asking our friends if they "want to play some wee?" has us embarrassed already. And forget about Nintendo shaking its perception as a company only for little kids.

Nintendo defends their naming with references to "iPod", "Napster", and other invented words. Those words are funky words, but they lack one, let alone many, negative or puerile connotations."

This is only embarassing for little children who can't deal with "dirty" words. I bet if they called it "******" they would be all over it. Saying how cool it was. "Lets play with our shits!" "hehe". Grow up.

This site is unprofessional and childish. I think Nintendo has done a fantastic job. Their description for the chioice in namel. It does not embarass me in the least. We should embrass creativity instead of casting it aside because it sounds "dirty".

Cliffs:
Nintendo changes name of Revolution to Wii.
Children of America go wild and bash it
Children decide to create a site to convince Nintendo to change their mind
Site was clearly written by a second grader
Children need to grow up

EDIT: I was wrong about the British. Wii seems to be the slang word for Urine. I have never used it that way. And I only here sub 5 years old say that they have to "wee wee"

How so... Sure the name has been discussed. However, I am pointing out a specific "group" that is using immaturity to try and sway Nintendo. So no, this is not a Wiipost.

Sally: Mom, Joey wouldn't let me play with his Wii. Tell him to let me play with his Wii!
Mom: Sally, how dare you! Go to room before I wash your mouth out with soap! You are never going to see Joey again!

You're whining about the whole "America rules the world" thing.
You say that it's not bad in England, so that supports #1
You were wrong about England, but you're still whining anyway.

I just sent this email to their suggestion box:

"I actually happen to like the name Wii. Even if I didn't like the name though, I don't think it would matter. Nintendo could call their console the "******-face" and I would still buy it, because their idea is original, and they are changing the way games are played. You are getting hung up on semantics, and forgetting what this console is really about."

I am not whining. My only point is that if they want Nintendo to change the name, they could at least present something of more substance. Something other than their embarassment of saying the name and it's "negative" connotations.

Its a dumbass name, negative connotations or not.

But why? At least give a reason.

For the simple reason that the majority of the American public (which are going to make up a fairly large market for Nintendo) think that it is. No other reason is needed. For a company to name a product (especially in the increasingly competitive market of videogames) a name that a large part of their market thinks is stupid makes it a stupid decision by the company.

indeed

its bad enough that sony has ps1/2/3. its repetitive, boring, unimaginative. but at least they didnt pull it out of their ass. wii is ridiculous. maybe they will see that a potentially large part of their intended market will think it stupid, and change it.

it wont affect whether or not *i* buy it, im looking forward to see what its like, but if i buy it and its called wii, ill still think the name is stupid. and thats not even because its reminiscient of weewee

I'm just messing with ya. No need to take me too seriously.

International corporations need to choose product names that will be effective in all of their demographics. Look at the Chevy Nova (no va), that is the punchline in every international business class.

Frankly I think somone in Nintendo's marketing department should be fired over it.
It is quite simply doesn't fit a console gaming system.
Revolution made perfect sense with what the big N wants to do with it, be revolutionary.
Wii, well other than sounding like a small child having fun, seems to have nothing to do with a console.
