I am using my Wii with the standard wires that came with the console. However, I am looking to go with component cables.

Exactly how much of a difference does using component make over the standard ones ?

I have searched online and really cannot find anything.

For your info, I am using a 40 inch Samsung 1080p set. I know the Wii don't run 1080p but on this screen, will components make a noticeable difference ?
 
Hmm...thanks. It does look like it makes a small difference yet noticeable.

Right now, I *think* my Wii is in 480i. Will the component cables allow it to run 480p ?

And is there a difference from 480i to 480p ?

 
It all depends on your TV. On the CRTs I tried it with there was a very noticeable difference in sharpness. On my GF's Sharp Aquos LCD there was a slight difference but it wasn't huge. On another LCD the difference was a little more noticeable. It's definitely worth the 5 bucks to pick one up.
 
I got the $5 component cable from monoprice and I thought it was a night and day difference. I have my wii connected to a projector shooting a 100" screen, so the difference might not be as drastic on a 40" TV, but I still think it would be worth the $5.
 
I haven't seen the Wii composite versus component. I have seen PS2 and xbox composite versus component. In both cases games were sharper and more detailed (though the PS2 had more jaggies--the Wii shouldn't have this problem as games ought to be 480p). Colors, especially blacks, were also significantly better. I'd say it's definitely worth it, especially given how cheap the cables are on monoprice.
 
I noticed a pretty big different on the LCD TV I have. I think the component cables provide a much better picture.
 
It's going to depend very much on how good your TV's scaler and deinterlacer are. If you've got a fairly high quality TV, it'll help a little, not a lot. If you've got a lower end one, you'll probably experience a pretty nice IQ gain.
 
Its a Samsung 1080p model. So it should be pretty good quality. Hopefully ill be picking up the Component this weekend. Will post how it goes 🙂

That's kind of what I figured as well. I picked up a generic component cable and the difference was night and day, but I have a pretty cheap LCD (brand is Maxent, most people probably haven't even heard of it, lol).
 
It helped a lot on my TV. Things looked much sharper but obviously you get more jaggies since most of the blur is gone but it looks so much crisper now.
