Yeah. Nintendo is what's left of handheld gaming. The more I think about it, if this thing really is thick like the Shield, it's not going to work. Portability and battery life is why Nintendo was able to last this long in handhelds while others failed.

What if the Nvidia deal has something to do with the "GRID" style streaming.. something to think about.

Last year Nintendo filed a patent for something called a "supplementary computing device," which would allow you to add additional processing power via additional hardware or (get this) the cloud. A lot of people think Nintendo will use the rumored docking station in this fashion, i.e. the NX handheld has a Tegra, but if you dock it to play through your TV, it can rely on an additional processor in the dock to upscale the graphics. It's also possible that they sell the dock separately, almost like you suggest, for people who want to save money or don't need to play on a TV.

Idea sounds kinda like the Jaguar all over again (sans the portable gaming, obviously).

Would be cool if it takes off. I like looking at past failures that turn out to be modern success stories for whatever reason. A product--or idea--ahead of its time, in a way.

Could be good for backwards compatibility purposes at least. I just know both my nephews will get these at their first birthday/christmas after launch, I might get one myself if it has some good games on it.

Sounds terrible for a portable system. "Hey, I'll finish this Zelda dungeon on the train!" *CONNECTION LOST*

So the NX came out 2 years ago? Nintendo's last two system gimmicks will have been outdated before it launched. (wiiu tablet, when tablets were surging. now this)

Pretty much, but honestly if Nintendo relaunched the Shield Portable in a better form factor and with the usual Nintendo first party titles (and possibly Tegra X2 instead of X1), then I think they would have a very compelling product on their hands (no pun intended).

The people that buy these portable tables do not care about graphics, but rather battery life and form.

It May help when the console at home, being able to play games with "better hardware" behind it. and in some sick way to stream pc games, (grid or local).

I am sure that a console that can run Nintendo games AND PC games without actually releasing nintendo games on PC. is what nintendo needed all along.

Might be still to soon for that network wise, but sure this isn't that bad of an idea. especially when you partner with Nvidia who's already running its Grid service.

Which is why they are all still using the Game Boy Advance SP, oh wait no they aren't.

Of course they care about graphics, just like they also care about form factor and battery life. It's not like people can only care about one or the other.

The goal for Nintendo is to hit an acceptable level for form factor and battery life, whilst pushing the performance as far as is possible (with what is possible performance wise to a large degree being a question of how much Nintendo is willing to spend on the BoM).

I really, really wish you'd stop confusing this device with a general purpose tablet. It is not a tablet and the reasons why people buy tablets have quite literally zero relevance to this discussion.

Makes zero sense to make that claim. People who purchase/d tablets aren't relevant? Since when does a child have money to buy a device like this? If you think this is irrelevant http://salesfuel.com/parents-buying-tablets-children/ you're insane.

Parents buy a lot of things for their kids, that's kind of implicit in the parent/kid relationship. This doesn't necessarily imply that said things are cross-shopped however.

It's not a tablet. It's a gaming console. This isn't up for debate. I'm sure there's a thread for tablet discussion if you are so inclined.
It's funny that you're making all these assumptions & then denouncing anyone else having their own assumptions as to what the NX might end up as. Can you just back off from claims that seem to imply you knowing more about the NX than the rest of us, unless of course you do know more?

...what?

My point is that a portable handheld console, regardless of the form factor, is utterly irrelevant to the tablet market, and thus it is patently ridiculous to suggest the NX is competing with an iPad just because they are both rectangles.

I am operating under the same assumptions as you. I am not pretending to know more information. If you got that impression then you are extremely confused.

Is that more clear?

The NX, the iPad, and cheap Android tablets are all in the category of "portable gaming devices parents give to their kids". They compete.

That is a comically niche market. We are discussing whether or not portable gaming devices compete with general purpose tablets overall. They do not.
That's what you're saying while the rest/some of us do not agree, in fact IMO a smartphone like Redmi Note 3 (excellent VFM) also competes for your $300 & btw I'm talking for the vast majority of people who don't have the luxury of owning every device they can get their hands on.

People buy consoles and tablets for ENTIRELY different reasons. The fact that there is any questioning that undeniable fact is completely ridiculous. Can we wrap this up, please?

This is like saying "people buy PCs and consoles for entirely different reasons". The majority of PCs are not bought for gaming, sure. But consoles still compete with PCs bought for gaming. Likewise, the majority of tablets are not bought for gaming- but a sizable minority are. And they compete with games consoles (and PCs for that matter).

You can play Mario on the Note 3? The Note 3 has dual joysticks? The Note 3 can be docked and played on your TV? The Note 3 has local multiplayer?

No. These are entirely different devices for entirely different use cases. Jesus Christ...

No, it's not, and if you were actually willing to just say "ok I was wrong" you wouldn't be working so hard to invent flawed counterarguments.

PCs are competitive with consoles because they can do everything a console can. You can even plug in a controller and connect it to a TV and have functionally the same experience. You cannot replicate the rumored NX features on a phone or tablet, this is an objective fact. Please drop it.
This is where you sound like a broken record, do you know what the NX will be like or if there will be two consoles from Nintendo?

As for some of your more reasonable arguments, let me ask will Nintendo release Zelda, Mario, Pokemon on an iphone or Android? If not why do I care, Nintendo with a handful of games is already competing in an ultra niche segment called the consoles. The phone/tablet market combined annually is bigger than what most consoles have sold in their lifetime. If I'm buying a console today it's not just for gaming, this is why the XBO & PS4 are also multimedia hubs. NX without basic MM capabilities is just asking for trouble, that is not up for debate

The upcoming consoles are better equipped to compete with PC because of their MM abilities, also because they occupy a price point where there isn't a direct competitor that can do so much more, as a console can & does.

The Nintendo 3DS doesn't have dual joysticks. The PSP didn't have dual joysticks and the PSP and PS Vita sure as hell don't have Mario. No portable gaming device apart from the NVidia Shield can dock and be played on your TV.

You just described a Venn diagram with precisely 0 devices in the intersection. Bravo.

Adding certain new features does not invent an entirely new category. They're portable devices used for gaming. Someone with $300 to spend on a device for playing games on the go will compare tablets, cheap laptops, portable consoles. Some will have more features, some less.
