The 3DS has done just fine without phone capabilities, and the reason why people would want a portable from Nintendo instead of an iPad is partly due to the Nintendo handheld being significantly cheaper and partly due to the games being orders of magnitudes better.
While the 3DS has done just fine, you're alienating a major chunk of potential users. Look, I'm all for another portable, but Nintendo is alienating users by insisting on being a hardware provider. They should know their strengths by now and we should all applaud them for it.
Creating a device, that can bridge the gap between 6-12 year old users would be a huge milestone. Making the gap 6-14 would be even better, but there are already devices out there that can do this.
