This isn't exactly new tech. I've used mice with similar gyroscopic motion tracking and they seem to work pretty well. I even used one to play Quake2 once. Aiming was pretty easy, but of course it wasn't so good for turning around. The real drawback was that it was TIRING.

its revolutionary alright. but like JZero said, I can see it getting tiring after a while, especially with the wheel. But maybe thats part of the design....get you tired after a while so you dont get hooked onto video games. after all, they are trying to make gaming more active...and the next best active thing is to go outside and play some sports...

I don't believe for a second that it will work as well as it looks to be working in their teaser.

I don't believe for a second that it will be anything short of a pain in the ass to use.

I don't belive you have ever tried the controller yet.

ALSO, FOR NORMAL GAMES, NINTENDO IS GOING TO INCLUDE A CONTROLLER SHELL. AS IN, NORMAL GAMES WILL WORK FINE.

i see this nintendo revolution going the way of the powerglove, powerpad, virtuaboy, and superscope of years past....... to the gaming graveyard. When I play games I don't want to have to do acrobatic moves on my couch or sweat. I want to relax and play a game. I go to the gym and play in a basketball league for a reason, video games are for something else.

everything you just named (aside from the dud known as virtual boy) is an accessory, designed for about 2-3 games.

this new controller is a necessity. the system is designed around this controller.

every game for the system will be developed around it. also as another person stated, there is some shell this will plug into that makes it a "normal" controller, and also, gamecube controllers will work on the revolution as well.

Then whats so revolutionary about it if you stick in a normal pad? Doesn't that take away the one unique thing about this system? Sorry it just sounds like a hyped up gimmicky econo-console to me. Don't get me wrong, I have always loved Nintendo but ever since the N64 they've been on a downward tumble in my opinion and they are going to go the way of Sega if this doesn't work out.

and yes, i agree the revolution looks cool as shlt. i have lost faith in nintendo after giving them one last hope w/the gamecube and it sucking, but if this revolution really stays under $200, then I'm going to get one.

EDIT:

The steering wheel looks pretty cool too

Dude, that wheel does look pretty cool. I wonder how well it will work...

That looks retarded. Unless you like to play with no force feedback I guess.

You have to throw a bone to the luddites who are unwilling to accept change. You also need it for backwards compatibility some of the older games.

You can play Donkey Konga with a regular controller, but it just isn't worth it. I imagine the newer games will be designed similarly....assuming it's done right and isn't a big fat flop :D

I see where you are coming from, but I have a question for ya ...

do you have a problem with Sony's MGS4, Killzone 2, or Fight Night Round 3 videos, since they are just concept videos as well?

Yes I do, first of all Solid Snake being portrayed as a child molestor and in CGI trying to pass off as in game footage is just stupid. I have not seen Fight Night's video so I cant be sure what the deal wht that is. Killzone is also bull. The only in game footage that I believe is real so far, is most of Xbox 360's videos.

Another thing I hated was Madden's video being touted as "in game" then screenshots came out and were not much better than the latest Xbox title... of course, I hate EA anyways.. but that's beside the point.

I don't think so. They've got a lot going for them, including the free online play (which will entice those who aren't willing to shell out for Xbox Live or whatever Sony comes up with, if indeed they come up with anything at all) and the most complete backward compatibility to ever grace *any* console. If they market this thing properly and put together a stellar launch lineup that *really* shows the promise of their control system, this could just be the beginning of a whole new way of interacting with games.

Oh, come on. If you want Gimmicks, check out PSP and it's stupid UMD movie crap, a so-called "feature" that does *nothing* to enhance, improve or otherwise change the gaming experience. Same with PS3 and its BD-ROM drive and MacinCell processor.

UMD = lots of storage for portable gaming and people can buy movies on it if they wish.

What other portable system has a 'vast' amount of memory space for a portable console? It is great imo.

PS3 Blue Ray will just give the game plenty of room. If no one takes it up fine, no biggie. Like the PS2 it gave consumers a cheap DVD option or a DVD option for another room.

Sony SO better not screw up the PS3 'online service'! XBox Live from what little I have used around a friends house seems GREAT  to MS for that.

Well, I love Nintendo and all that and I hope this will sell, but you can't forget sticking with high cost cartridges(sp) and the powerglove(WTF was that).

There seems to be a lot of misconception about how this things works. It's nothing like a light gun. There are two sensors placed near the console/tv (they havn't been shown yet so we don't really know how they look) and from those two sensors and the controller itself the system knows where it it terms of left/right back/forward and up/down.

On top of that there are gyroscopes in the controller to detect pitch and tilt. This gives you pretty much free movement in a three dimensional space.

Lack of games, inferior technology.

The controller may be good, or it may not. That is irrelevant. If its good, Microsoft and Sony will copy it immediately. It's not like the technology behind it is particularily revolutionary.

And Nintendo will lose, again.

apparently you have no clue what market Nintendo is going for.

they themselves even admitted that they aren't going to go up against MS or Sony this time around. they are for a completely different audience than MS and Sony.

they are keeping their system very simple minded. i can guarantee you that the (promised by nintendo) $200 or less price tag will make the Revolution go into many MANY more homes than the PS3 come xmas time.

I'm not buying that. I think Sony will still outsell revolution with the PS3........whatever the price.

there is every indication this thing works by simple flicks of the wrist, not jerking your whole body around.

not that hundreds of thousands of people don't already do that playing ddr.

UMD is Sony's grab at having their own proprietary format steal the portable market. The movies are overpriced, have lower resolution than standard definition television, come with no extras and drain the PSP battery in about 2.5 hours. It's an OK storage medium for games, but really, it's nothing more than a Gamecube disk in a plastic shell.

BluRay is, as with practically *everything* Sony, overhyped, misunderstood and not nearly as fabulous as they'd love you to believe. For starters, they've managed to get the single layer manufacturing tech pretty stable, so that's 25GB. Not bad, to be sure, but they never quote 25 GB in any kind of press releases or otherwise, they claim 50. Trouble is, they haven't demonstrated a stable manufacturing process for dual layer or beyond. Yeah, it may get there eventually, but so far it's NOT there, yet they keep acting as if it were.

Second, it's SLOW. A 1X BD-ROM, which is likely what PS3 will have, runs at about the speed of a 36X CDROM drive, which is roughly equivelent to a 4X DVD. Expect slower loading times on PS3 vs 360.

Third, it's so far *irrelevant* for gaming. Even the largest games have yet to take up a full DVD-9 yet, much less more than that. GTA:SA, which everyone cites as being so huge, fits on a *single layer* DVD. The install for the PC version--which has much higher resolution assets than the PS2 version--is 3.9GB on DVD and 4.3GB installed. While texture sizes will certainly go up significantly, model sizes probably will not. 3D Models are, after all, just simple ASCII text files full of coordinates and UV Mapping data. They aren't real huge to begin with.

BluRay, much like UMD, is nothing more than a power-grab by Sony, an attempt to grab both the emerging portable movie market and the home HD movie market by the balls so that *every* content provider distributing *any* movie, whether portable or for home, has to pay a royalty fee to Sony. Don't forget, too, that in the BluRay spec, players must be connected to the internet so they can validate the authenticity of the media being played back. Welcome back, Divx!

So you're saying that if Rev is $200 and PS3 is $500, it will still outsell it? I don't think so. PS3 will sell a lot thanks to their brand recognition, but if they gouge at the register like they're hinting they will, they won't see mainstream adoption for awhile. Not to mention, they've got MS and its' 360 out anywhere from 6 months to a year before PS3, and perhaps the only person on earth stupid enough to say "Microsoft isn't a competitor" is Ken Kutaragi.

Time for the big N to lead innovation again and have the 'cool' companies like MS and Sony to shamelessly rip-off Nintendo's innovations a la rumble pad, analog sticks, and shoulder buttons

Pity me, only 'cool kids' like myself don't play 'un-cool' products made by Nintendo because no one wants to be not cool.

FIXED!
