I don't think Nintendo is playing this time around. They going to go all out in order to have the best.
They kinda sorta did that with the N64, but it was still not a big success. IMO they'd have to set the bar a lot higher than the competition to be successful in this round of consoles. In particular, the multimedia versatility of the XBox 360 is something the others will now have to match, and it ain't gonna be easy.
They half-assed with the N64 in that they stuck with the cartridge format which was
really starting to show its age by that point.
And I question the necessity of matching Microsoft's fetish for multimedia work; keep in mind that they have a natural edge in this because of the dominance of Microsoft software in the marketplace; it's not too tough for them to be able to link hardware together when it's running software that can easily inter-communicate.
Another question I have is whether people even
want this inter-connectivity. I know that my computer is discrete from any console that I have, and I have
zero interest in having my computer and console communicate at will and without any input from me.
Maybe it's just me being overly paranoid, but from what I've read (and how I've interpreted it), a Media Center PC will be able to send music to your Xbox360 automatically. Since Microsoft is everyone's favorite target for malware, viruses and the like, how long will it be before the first Xbox virus comes out?
I'm not trying to make it seem like I've got an aluminum hat or anything; this seems like a valid point to me.
