It was going for about $45 recently. You'll need a microSD card for it though, which can be had for cheap in various places.

R4 Multimedia Card

Too old to be bumped for a question that has nothing to do with the deal anyway.

I ran across this accidentally when I got in on the green laser deal posted before. Ordered them (got 2) last week. They're supposed to work with all DS versions... the only problem I've read about is that the download play doesn't work. Like if you are using an R4 in a DS and want to play a multiplayer game with someone else, the download play wont work, but if that person has the game you want to play you can still play multiplayer. If you have a DS you probably know what I mean... it's harder to describe than I thought it'd be.

does this work with the new red/black ds lite? I read that there were some cards like these that don't work withthe new ds.

I have the new red/black DS and R4 from DealExtreme. Works perfectly so far! =)

I went with a DS simply , which is like the exact same thing. After my GF and I bought like 16 games, it got totally ridiculous trying to carry them around and mobile gaming was only kind of mobile. We were worried about misplacing or dropping cartridges, so this added a ton of utility to our mobile gaming.

somewhat true.. only certain games (although a large chunk of the GOOD ones) wont work. a compatibility list here: http://wiki.scorpei.com/index.php/R4_compatibility_list

Thanks OP. Ordered two of the bundled 1gig card version. This will come in handy for my wife and daughter. Both lose game cartridges left and right. I've had to rebuy Yoshi Island and Nintendog twice already.

I have the M3 Simply DS and the M3 *Lite* which fits in SLOT-2 (The bottom slot) and I recommend this or the M3's to everyone. I love them. I use the M3 lite for my GBA games and the Simply for NDS games.

how does this compare to the M3 Simply with game compatibility?

It is the same thing. The only different between the M3 and R4 is the firmware. You can mod a M3 into a R4 by connecting/disconnecting two solder points.

New R4 firmware used to come out sooner than M3. Sometimes the M3 came out sooner. So it is like 50-50.

The game compatibility depends highly on the quality of MicroSD card. The gold standard is the Japan-made Kingston 2GB. Virtually everything except for some "Download Play" works on the R4 and DS.

Basically... we all know what you are going to do with this... for that usage, it is perfect. Works basically flawlessly.

There is ONE problem with both the R4 and M3, and just ONE. The spring (the retains the MicroSD card) breaks. Actually it isn't even the spring that breaks. What breaks is the plastic "seat" which the hook catches so that card doesn't come out. That is what actually breaks.

It doesn't break so much as it "it wears down". The "seat" is about 1mm wide and 0.5mm tall. Very small that the hook has to grab. Once that breaks, you can open it and tweak the metal hook to grab better and it will work again... for a while. Eventually if you are like me take your MicroSD out... alot. It is will permanently break... In which case you either has to glue down the hook so that there is no more "springy action" or you hold the MicroSD down with tape.

So bottomline, spring bad. Everything else good. Can be used exactly for "what you expect to use it for" if you get the Kingston Japan-made MicroSD. Excellent value provided you have access to the Usenet or Torrents 🙂

Oh my, this makes me want to pick up a DS just for the potential fun to be had...

Mine came today, Oct 12th.
I ordered it Sept 26th and it shipped out Sept 27th. It'll come registered mail, so you'll have to sign for it.

Ordered one a week ago. Really can't wait to check this thing out!

Was able to DG my PSP to 1.5 & have been having a BLAST with it!

DealExtreme is a good site. Ordered one back in May, no problems. Perfect for me since I live in Vietnam, and it's not so easy to buy games over here. (I've had shop owners laugh at why I would buy games)
