Nintendo DS Lite

Just curious...if there is a way to play the ROM's of the original games (contra, tecmo bowl, master blaster...ect) or if there is a way to buy them?

I have read a little bit tonight on the DS Lite as my son is asking for one (he is the ripe age of 5)

You need a flash cart like the dstt to play nintendo games, you can get that card for about 8 bucks at dealextreme.com.

I'm pretty sure it's possible with a slot 2 (GBA) flash cart. I don't know if it's possible with a slot 1 (NDS) flash cart. As far as I know you can only run NDS code from a slot 1 cartridge, so someone would have to write a NES emulator for the NDS to make that possible. There is a NDS emulator for the GBA, which is why you can do it with a slot 2 flash cart. Some of them even have NES emulators built in.

You need 3 things:

1) DS card (R4, M3, Cyclone, Acekard, etc.) that allows for homebrew to run on the DS.
2) A NES emulator (example) -- not sure which one is recommended.
3) ROM of the NES game you want to play.

I got a NES emulator for my DS and just used it on the memory card with my cyclods. the problem is that it doesn't appear to save the games. I only tried playing Final Fantasy on it but it always makes me start a new game

there's a DS version of tecmo bowl out there. great game, except they didn't tie it in with the NFL. it's easy enough to rename the people on your favorite team, though.

there's also a DS version of contra.

I got a lead on a used DS Lite and the person has a CycloDS Evolution with a 2 gb sd card

Is that all I need to get going once you find the emulator and the ROM's?

Should be. There are NES emulators out there for the DS (like NESDS) as well as SNES, Genesis, etc. You can even get Quake and Quake II running on your DS, though I haven't tried it yet (the latter requires a Slot 2 device).
