Nintendo announces new gaming console (for emerging markets)

sounds like they realize they have totally lost the mainstream console market and are just going for a new market. the nintendo as we all remember is nearly completely gone it seems.

New market not used to video games?

Watch it totally be a NES relaunch! :awe:

Or left over Game and Watch type stuff 😛

"Emerging markets" India and China?

"Nintendo will launch a new console, not the Wii U or 3DS, in "emerging markets" as early as next year, president Satoru Iwata has revealed. Speaking with Reuters, Iwata said Nintendo will develop not only a new console, but new games as well, aimed at lower-income consumers and those with less gaming experience than people from developed countries."

yup, doesn't look like it'll affect us at all

That's like dumping the zapper and selling new duck hunt bundles.

The tablet is an integral part of the Wii U as a system.

Not many games utilize it or require it however. I could see a tabletless system but ONLY if they start selling the tablet along side Wiimotes, nunchucks, etc. for games that require it.

It would be amusing if these cheaper games actually end up being rather fun and Nintendo finds a lot of desire for this cheap console. 😛

Interesting. Makes sense; don't some manufacturers still make and sell a lot of dumb phones to the third world?

I thought this would be a troll thread. Was disappointed.

"Low income" has always been their target audience since the Wii. I wish they'd pick a direction. If it's an ARM-based machine, I might be on board.

Are you going to move to China?

It's what they have needed to do for a long time. Brazil, India, China, and the Middle East have a growing video game scene which is largely untapped by Sony and Microsoft. Lots of small development studios cropping up in these countries that are hungry for exposure.

What Nintendo needs to do is release a $100 retro game box. For $5 you can get Mario 3, Super Mario World, etc.

Sell in Urban Outfitters.

Everyone is like: "Nintendo. Just make a good console. That's all you have to do to get us back".

Nintendo is like: "Nope. Good consoles are expensive. Making another shitty console instead".

*facepalm*

They don't need to make a console that can compete graphically with the PS4 or Xbone. Just make it cheap enough that we don't care. That is their problem.

A Wii U is a must buy at $150 with a Pro controller instead of that dumb tablet and Mario Kart thrown in.

That's what they probably should do, but Nintendo has a track record of ignoring their fans and pretty much what everyone else in the industry is doing. It's not exactly helping their cause anymore.

It shouldn't be that hard to make a game console that has better graphics than the XBox One or PS4, considering that both of them have the video and processing power of a $350 PC.

I'll bet that the Steam Machines will totally stomp them performance wise.

But the problem is you can't just beat them on hardware. In order to really win the hardcores, you have to:

1. Have more power than either

2. Have a better or as good as online network as either

3. Have the best version of a popular third-party cross-platform game to show off the power

That is obviously too high of a bar for Nintendo. They could throw enough power in a box, but have a real online experience and be nice to third parties? No dice.

BUUUUT

They could throw together something better than a 360 (just using ARM) with a library of nostalgic games (even if they are just Wii/N64/Gamecube HD redos) and as long as the price is right it could make them billions of dollars.

Build a PC including OS for $350 that plays the same games at the same settings.

We have been over this time and time again on this forum. Your hypothetical price point is borderline lying.
