Ninja Gaiden 2

Kabob

Lifer
I've been debating getting NG2 since it came out. I LOVE Black (which I'm currently playing through...again) but I don't know if NG2 has the same replay value as Black does or if it's even close to as good.

Looking for some input. How's the difficulty of 2? How's the replay value? Is the game fun? Worth a buy or just a rent?

Thanks!

Edit 1/15/09
Ninja Gaiden 2 is $9.99 at Best Buy this week.

The game has a lot of replay value because of all the new weapons you get to use.

But the gameplay can be a bit frustrating and downright unfair at several points in the game on higher difficulty.
If you are a skilled NG player then you wont have much problems. The combat is very rewarding if you know how to pull the moves.

I completed the game on warrior difficulty and i am never going to put myself through the frustration of playing it again. But then i dont consider myself to be a skilled gamer.
i would suggest renting it and going through the story once.

I've thought about that, my concern being that there are times when I can play as long as I want and other times that I will get an hour of Xbox in over a week, just depends. So if I rented and had no time to play...

Any AATers got it and are bored of it? I'd love to borrow it, I can pay for shipping both ways ^^

I loved the last Xbox Ninja Gaiden, so I picked this up within a few days of release. I love the play, and some of the new weapons are amazing. There are definitely a good deal of the "unfair" moments spoken of. And there's some things I don't recall from the previous Ninja Gaiden that might have been there, but are pretty awesome (severing limbs, beheadings, executions, running on water).

I'm only trying on the easiest setting and find it frustrating as hell sometimes. I also had to put it on hold because I decided I was gonna beat Blue Dragon before I left the game unbeaten forever.

Have you tried the demo to see if you can handle the frustrating camera? Never played Black but I hear the camera in 2 is awful. I agree that the camera is awful as the demo stopped me from buying it, but I have nothing else to compare it to in the series.

No, the camera in the first Ninja Gaiden on Xbox was awful, in black at least they added the ability to rotate it. I can handle it.

Played the demo, wasn't too difficult. Definately alot more greusome though.

yea that camera angle thing is very frustrating. nothing like the camera swinging behind a pillar or column during a fight.

Never played Black, but I have the original NG with the two HPs, and the difficulty of NG2 is comparable for the most part. NG2 is much more frustrating though, due to a combination of an often-annoying camera angle (right in the middle of an intense battle) and a gross excess of rocket-launching enemies. I feel that NG2 is more extreme than the first, both in terms of the good and the bad. The upgraded graphics, combat system, violence, and gore are countered by more claustrophobic-feeling levels and cheapness. The camera is manageable, as you don't really need to see your character every single moment once you are familiar with the controls. Getting slammed by off-screen rockets and fireballs, on the other hand, gets old.

That said, I was/am a huge fan of NG1, and absolutely love NG2. The replay value is absolutely there if you enjoy tearing enemies apart ad nauseum. If Warrior was too easy for you, Mentor and Master Ninja are disproportionately more difficult. It is unfortunate that much of this difficulty comes from projectile-launching enemies, but skill and strategy can still prevail.

I pre-ordered NG2, played through once on Warrior, and am still struggling through Mentor. Warrior was a decent challenge, but Mentor has caused much cursing, frustration, and lost sleep; still, I keep coming back for more, so I guess that says a lot 🙂

In the end, NG has always been about combat and challenge, and NG2 has both in excess; any fan of the original XBOX version owes it to him/herself to purchase a copy.

Anybody know when they will be releasing this on the PS3? I loved Ninja Gaiden on the XBOX - that was a great game. Don't really want to buy Ninja Gaiden Sigma considering it's just a rehash of the xbox version.

Only got my 360 few months back and one of the first games I got was NG 1. Had a great time, though found it quite hard. So NG2 was the first game I got on release day.

First play through was on Acolyte, obviously, and I had fun with it. There were challenging moments, but nothing too stressful. I decided this would be one game I would try and get all the achievements for....

Then I started playing through on warrior. I can now only play it for short periods, and with days in between attempts. Its such a different game between Acolyte and Warrior, and it kind of stopped being fun. No way I will finish the harder difficulties.

One of the problems that plague warrior mode are the projectile launching enemies, especially the rocket launcher guys, which I hated enough on acolyte. Then, there are a lot of frame rate drops, due to number of enemies. Also, when you get said number of enemies, it can sometimes be impossible to see whats going on.

So acolyte is fun, for me at least. Warrior and harder is for the masochists and extremely good players.

And I kind of found out I have been seriously under-using Ryu's moves last night when I went to look at a walkthrough. It listed all these ways to move him and slash things up that I did not know existed. So I am quite looking forward to playing through acolyte again, using him to his full abilities. I just need to get through bloody warrior difficulty first 🙁

Edit: I just remembered, as fun as 1 was, I never actually finished it. I got right near the end, but there were so many bosses to fight in a row, I gave up. I just prefer fighting the "normal" enemies in these games.

I wish they would use the fighting mechanics of this game for a more down-to-earth game with involving story line.

There has been no announcement of a PS3 port, and such words as "exclusive" have been bandied about.

I loved NG on the Xbox but I found NG2 to be a billion times more frustrating becasue of the camera issues. I wouldn't buy it.

Hrm, I might give it a try and if I don't like it just resell it, not sure yet though. Need to beat NGB again first, I'm at the "dark awakening" part. Never played it above normal difficulty, every time I want think I'll try something will happen (was gonna start a Hard game and my save file was corrupted by a 360 BC update, etc).

Picked up a copy the other day. My first impressions.

Some of the boss fights in this game are infuriating. In the original game there was a rhyme, reason, and strategy to fighting every one of them. As far as I can tell in NG2 it's "if they want to hit you they will and it'll take 1/2 your life off". First few bosses were easy, it all started with the flying robot fish thingy in the subway. He and the water boss were, IMHO, majorly BS. The first giant walking guy in NY before the fiend was also a bit tough. Maybe there's a strategy I didn't see...

On the other hand the boss that "should" be difficult are pushovers. The first greater fiend I killed and only got hit once or so.

I don't mind a difficult game, but "cheap" games I can't stand. And I haven't even met one of the above mentioned rocket launcher enemies yet...

Also, combos in NGB took some know-how to pull off. In NG2 you can button mash and it works. Not quite as much fun. Also, I've gotta say, I don't have a problem with the gore but after a while slicing off limbs gets a bit old.

Haven't had too many complaints with the camera yet but we'll see as the game goes on if it becomes an issue. Did have a glitch while fighting the giant bone guy, something happened and I went through the floor (or should I say he went above it) and I couldn't hit him and had to reload my game.

So far I've only used the Dragon Sword (figure I might as well get my 5 mighty achievement points for using it only), it was easily my best weapon in NGB. Maybe the bosses are easier with other weapons, oh well.

Still got a long way to go, we'll see how I end up liking it.

I really like it, yes I have had some slow down issues and camera issues but I think if you enjoyed NGB you will like this.

I agree that the bosses are a weak point in the design of the game. There are simply too many, and there really isn't much strategy involved offense-wise.

I think you will find the combat gets deeper on Mentor, and with the other weapons. Button mashing certainly works early on in Warrior, but as you progress, strategy does become more critical. It becomes increasingly important to take advantage of invisibility frames, to use Wind Path, and to choose the right tool for a given confrontation.

After playing for some time, I find that perfecting timing and reading enemy movements are the aspects that keep the game interesting. For every seemingly cheap enemy attack, there really IS a strategic means to counter it. Still there are plenty of situations where all you can do is slam the controller down and scream obscenities at the cheapness of an off-screen projectile or camera-induced blind spot.

Played a lil' more. Once again, the boss that SHOULD have been tough was a push over (Volf) while the giant fire armadillo thingy...it was easy but it killed me 2 times with it's dying explosion (finally the 3rd time I had full life and even then the explosion almost killed me).

Then I met my first ever rapid firing head seeking missile launcher guy, TONS of fun they are (I stood right behind one and the rockets launched backwards out of his gun).

how are you supposed to get out of the explosion?

anyway, I had NG1 for xbox and I thought it was teh sex but I never beat it. I got stuck at a point in some stage with some platforms and swinging axe thingies... and nowhere to go, it was a long time ago I dont' even remember, almost 5 years ago.

I thought it was really hard (I played it on default difficulty) and hating the respawning enemies. I think that's the cheapest way to make games.

I remember that crazy developer guy saying in an interview that NG2 would be the greatest game ever made. hah.

Yeah, not quite. Really it is fun, but it certainly has flaws.

I just finished this part couple of days ago. You have to make sure to block when he's exploding.

Resurrecting this thread as I figure alot of people bought this game due to the super cheap Best Buy price (for those of you who don't know, Best Buy has NG2 for $9.99 this week).

This game lacks alot of the polish that NGB had, and there are moments in this game that are just plain cheap/frusterating, but it's still pretty fun (if you can get past those parts with your sainity intact).

I'm one of those people. I still haven't really started Ninja Gaiden Sigma, so it will probably be a while before I open this one.
