Who HASN'T heard of those two? There was a widely circulated e-mail forward when it happened, and it was cross-posted to every message board on the Internet, including this one. It was also filled with inaccuracies to make the story seem more horrific than it really was. There was a clear agenda - they turned it into a story about the racist media ignoring stories with white victims and/or black perpetrators, even though that is the opposite of reality. Crimes with white victims are reported at a disproportionately high rate by the media (I'm sure we're all familiar with "missing [pretty] white woman syndrome") and crimes with black perpetrators are reported at a disproportionately high rate by the media. The premise of that chain e-mail was entirely false. The media does not try to hide black on white crime. They suckered you and a lot of other people into being more outraged about these two murders than about the other 16,000 murders that happen in this country every year.

There is still a lot of racial strife in this country, and white people are as much to blame as black people. I see a lot of angst and resentment toward black people in this thread and a lot of other threads here.

This was the first time I have heard about this crime.

What were the innacuracies in this article? It gave a detailed description of what the criminals did, so I am curious as to what in this article is inaccurate. Surely if you claim that this article is not telling the full truth, you will be able to back it up with the "real" truth.

I have no angst against black people, im just curious to see what was "sensationalized" in this article.

I respect your POV, however, even if his penis wasn't cut off or her breast cut off, still doesn't lesson my or anyone else's outrage. The missing 'pretty white women' stories that you mention appear daily in our media so they don't have to cover the evil ones like the one I mentioned. There usually is no suspect, and when there is it's usually the hubby or a family member so it is considered 'safe' to publicize....the media seems dead set on keeping everyone numb.

Wow - you really think this is some concerted effort by the media to hide black on white crime? The story you mentioned did not generate national media attention because it is not of national interest. That's all there is to it. The news is driven by ratings, and that story wouldn't get ratings (especially after the inaccuracies are removed).

The funny thing is, your exaggeration was correct, but you got the races wrong. What you describe DID happen to the so-called Jena Six, a group of 6 black kids who beat up a white kid. They were charged as adults, and they were charged with attempted murder. Turns out that if the prosecutor didn't charge them with attempted murder in the first place, he wouldn't have been able to charge them as adults. Now that he has dropped the absurd attempted murder charges, they can't be transferred back to juvenile court because the process has already started in adult criminal court. So by inflating the charges, he was able to charge them as adults when he had no business doing so under the law. It was an interesting shell game he played.

The U.S. Attorney, Donald Washington <who is black> reviewed the case and found the DA did nothing wrong. You and I and everyone can say how the Jena 6 got such a bad deal for such crime but none of us are lawyers. Mr. Washington is and he didn't see any "excessive" charges or "illegal" act by the local DA.

BTW, Bell is in jail now <after he got the bond money to get out from the beating charge>. He is in jail now because not of the Jena 6 charge(s) but from another previous charge. Just to show you that Bell are a repeated offender and didn't just lose his cool on that day.

This was the first I've heard of the murders too. Though from the link you posted it sounds like the lack of media attention on this is due more to the authorities doing their job and keeping things out of the media. I actually prefer it when the authorities protect evidence. The less the media is allowed to get their hands on the better. Violence begets violence, and the more the media shows us, the more people get ideas in their head. Movie violence isn't real, and most people can separate fantasy from reality. But when it's on the news, what's there to separate?

If it's not a story about the plight of a minority geared to perpetuate guilt, then the media wants no part of it.
Of course if they do slip up and focus on it, then they are labelled as bigoted scum that only represent "the man".

Lets see teachers are attacked everyday by students. Both black and white. Does it matter that they were black? Kids in general today are sick. Is this group any worse than the asian dude who shot up VT or the white kid with the help of his mother was brewing a plot to commit mass murder at a school.
