NIMDA killed a system

OK, so my dad's pc got infected with NIMDA.

Now, Win2k won't start correctly, and Win2k setup cannot find a certain file and crashes, so I can't use the repair console.

The NIMDA repair program that McAfee provides cannot be run from a DOS prompt.

Whenever you try to read the hard drive at a DOS prompt, it locks up the computer.

There is essential data on this hard drive ... any chance of getting it back? If so, how?

you could always try taking out the hard drive and throwing it in a secondary system and pulling the files off that way

Slave the hd to another win2k PC with an up to date mcafee or norton. Also make sure this pc has the most recent patches off microsoft's site.

You can also reisntall win2k on the machine and get it cleaned off that way. Just reinstall win2k. You will not loose any data.

once you get it back up and running, burn important data to a cd.

Adul: I am trying to reinstall, but when setup starts loading all that stuff (the stuff displayed at that bar along the bottom), it gives the FNF error.

My only other suggestion is to slave it to another pc with win2k on it or add a empty hd to this system, install win2k and run the current hd has a slave.

Also, I would download and run F-Prot a DOS based anti-virus (free) that doesn't need any O/S

FNF=File not found - its extension has been changed by the virus
