Got the camera back and went out last night to take pictures of one of the best sunsets I've ever seen. No spots but it was just cleaned.

The packing slip says they replaced 6 different types of double stick tape and a shutter plate unit. Plus a cleaning.

There's also a paragraph explanation of what they did and it's interesting because they say (in Swedish) "Repair / replacement of shutter". So not sure if they popped a new unit in there or not.

Too little too late. After 28-29 years of being with Nikon (non-professional), I jumped ship.Nikon's poor business manner in the D600 debacle just sent chills down my spine. I had already decided against the D600 because of the problem and was starting to focus on the D800E, but Nikon as a company just turned my view of them sour.

Instead, I bought the Canon 5D MkIII and so far I have been happy with it. Not advocating one product over another (e.g. D800E vs. 5D MkIII), but that sometimes companies are f-ing clueless at handling their customer base. And this current Nikon offering was only AFTER one law firm got class-action status in a suit and three other firms on the heels of filing suits.

Lying to customers and only addressing the issue after serious legal threats is not what I want from a company I am spending thousands of dollars on.

I just sent my D600 in last Monday and should be receiving it back today. Pretty quick turnaround! I also sent in my 24-70 for focus issues and it's coming today too. I'm impressed by the speed of the service, but can't say about the quality until tonight.

I should email or call them soon - they sent me the acknowledgment/service letter March 27, and the online tracker said "shop" a day or two later.
The status hasn't changed - tomorrow marks 3 weeks.

I miss it. :(

edit:

Aha! I never reached out to them, but it appears that it now has the status "Billing", instead of "Shop."
Cool - perhaps I'll see it sometime next week.

edit 2:
lol talk about timing. Just a minute ago I got an email from UPS with a tracking number. Current estimate is a Friday delivery. Nice.

I got my camera back yesterday (Friday).

The service write up claims they replaced the shutter mechanism, they listed "related parts" 6x underneath the line stating they replaced the shutter, they cleaned the sensor, and performed a general check and clean.

Some of the first photos I've taken were of a perfectly blue and very clear sky (no clouds, nothing). Before I put the lens back on, I tried to make extra sure that the rear element was free of dust and dirt and marks, and I did the same for the front element before taking shots of the sky.

Zooming both 1:1 and 2:1 on the photo and checking everywhere, I see no dust spots or other dark spots of any kind.

I also pulled up the shutter actuation numbers. It looks like they performed about 2000 shutter actuations.
Hopefully the large majority of those were on the new shutter. I only had about 3400 actuations before I sent it in, and I had stubborn spots that matched the description of the oil splatter. If they performed nearly 2000 on the new shutter, I'd be seeing them now or very soon.

It's still possible that they had spots after those 2000 actuations but after a clean it's good - I'll keep firing away and every now and then checking against a nice background like a blue sky to check over time, but so far so good. :)

I'll admit I was hoping to get a D610 back in exchange for my troubled D600, but I'll accept this camera performed as accepted.

I didn't check the shutter count. That sounds like quite a bit.

I'm happy for it. I had read of varying numbers on dpreview, some in the thousands, some in the hundreds.

Many claimed the original shutters didn't start throwing oil splotches until a few thousand shutter actuations, so I'm happy that Nikon appears to have tested the hell out of the camera.
