These are rumors from two sources that I trust 99.9%.
Given the credibility of the sources, I'm quite sure that the cameras will be announced anytime soon.

D3X - Full Frame camera geared toward studio professionals.
D10 - Budget Full Frame camera.
D90 - DX format camera.

As expected, the 24MP Sony sensor in a D3 body.

D10 - Budget Full Frame camera.
:Q So soon? I wasn't expecting this before early next year. I guess they don't want to give the 5DMk2 a head-start.

D90 - DX format camera.
Putting the D300 sensor in a D80 body  Nikon was smart enough (from a business perspective) to release their semi-professional body based on this sensor a year earlier, to milk the market with higher-margin sales.

If this is true then man Nikon is making all the right moves while Canon is sitting around with their thumbs in the rears.

they did the same thing with the D200 --> D80.

nikon's numbering scheme is almost as bad as nvidia's. who is making the sensor on the budget 135? nikon?

I think it will be the same sensor as the D3, but in a D300 body.

Not entirely; Canon just started some huge rebates (instant and MIR) on some popular cameras. The 40D body is under $950, and a 40D/28-135mm kit is under $1150. The 5D kit is around $2500, and the body alone is around $1800 (D300 territory).

Nikon is also dishing out some discounts; most of them smaller, but the D300/18-200mm kit does have a $300 instant rebate attached. Most noticeably, Nikon has substantially increased their marketing budget, to the point where I see far more Nikon TV and print ads now than for any other camera company.

Not 100% true but Canon did get a bit complacent sitting out front for a bit IMO

On the 40D body where are you getting those prices? All the shops I have been to near me are quoting me the $1200ish for the body. Is that instant or MIR? At that price IMO it's better to go that route then the XSi (only a few hundred more for a better camera IMO).

Edit: Well I found the 40D at those prices on Amazon, but can't retail for some reason.

i'm assuming they'll limit the sensitivity range and speed

you sound like a canon shooter

people mostly seem to complain about the 5D's replacement not being here already. seems like people think the $1500+ camera market should be like the video card market, if it ain't out before the competitor has something, you're late. considering the 5D was a year after the 1Ds II, i don't know why people were expecting the replacement any faster than a year after the 1Ds III. not like nikon has a competing camera to the 5D anyway.

it's not like canon didn't have three new SLRs out in the last few months. the only real obvious miss was the 40D lacking contrast-detect live view, considering the digic processor in the 40D can do it.

Well, I think people just want to see a big jump other than these incremental tweaks. Kinda like what Nikon did w/ their D300. I'm glad they have something to light the spark canon has been sitting on.

I really just want to see prices drive down down down :)

B&H and Adorama have them on their sites. Retail B&M stores will always be more expensive.

Exactly; 6FPS just like the D300 (not 9FPS like the D3), and they'll probably limit the ISO range to 6400 or 12800 (HI 1), but they won't limit sensor performance.

All best guesses though. I've got no 'sources'.

best guess is either the olympics or photokina for the announcement. no one knows as to availability.

No. Because FF sensor + D300 = D3.

Or at least, how are you in a position to have such sources?

I think I've given you guys the wrong impression. I'm not the source and I do not even know the sources personally.
The rumor is from the two people on the camera site that I go to. They have predicted Nikon's upcoming cameras for some years and all of them came out true within a few months.
Oh and one of the people I mentioned is Nikon's beta tester and he claimed that he held D3x in person.

It was good, yeah. But the D300/D3 release just seemed to feel more like Nikon flexing their muscles. I won't likely switch myself since I seem to be locked into wanting to easily play with new glass (ie huge used market) but it was good to see.

Except for the battery life of the D200, it was a very nice machine--a digital F100 to the D2X (digital F5).
