Nikon J1 vs V1, what would make the J1 a no-brainer to you?

I was looking at both these cameras and the V1 is bigger, but offers a lot more. That said I am not looking of a micro-DSLR so some of the benefits I don't care about.

Digital viewfinder, mic jack and the hot shoe are nice, but really optional to me.

The nicer LCD screen is something I wish the J1 had.

Outside of that, IQ-wise aren't they pretty equivalent? It's hard to find a lot on these.

Any other alternatives? I keep debating picking up a nice camera, but with iphone and my wife's SD780 and S95; my 'snap shots' have been good. ;)

While the RX100 looks like a great camera, with the fixed lens, it seems more on par with the GX1. The 3.6x zoom is very limiting. However, if you are not looking at ever getting the 130mm lens from Nikon or using an adapter on other DSLR lenses, then the RX100 looks like a great camera.

J1 is practically 3x the size of the RX100

Without the lens, they are basically the same size:
RX100 - 4.0 x 2.3 x 1.4
J1 - 4.2 x 2.4 x 1.2

Obviously, the lenses make it larger, but it also gives you the ability to go beyond the 30-100mm equivalent range that the RX100 has. As I said before, if the OP doesn't need anything outside that range, then go for it. I'm certainly not trying to push the Nikon (Canon guy myself), but know how annoying it can be with a very limited zoom range.

The RX100 is a consideration...I wish it went down to a wider angle like 24mm.

I can sneaker zoom for my needs in a compact.

You could also have a look at the sony nex 5n. I believe it's price is in line with the two you mentioned, and it's image quality is quite good.

The new version (nex 5r) is coming out soon so there are deals to be had on the 5n.

yeah, i wish it was 24mm too.

but the J1/V1's 10-30mm lens is ~27.2mm equivalent, so you wouldn't be getting 24mm from them anyway.

also, at first the J1/V1 received a lot of flak.. but now since they're dropping the pricing, it's technically not a bad option.

I agree, I was figuring since none went really wide, the J1/V1 I could at least pick up more at the other end.

I am really thinking of staying high end compact, but not looking to go way past $500 or so if I do. Just don't use it enough.

I just bought a V1 w/ 10-30 VR lens for $379 shipped from Adorama using coupon code off Ken Rockwells site for my son.

I really like the one I bought for myself just about a month ago. Ijust put it thru its paces at Six Flags this last weekend.

Here is one photographers experience with the V1: http://www.stevehuffphoto.com/2012/...e-sensor-and-love-the-camera-by-craig-litten/

Yeah, see, that's what I'm talking about. The V1 retailed @ $899 (J1 @ $649).
$899 for that, and if you weren't going to get any other lenses I would have definitely suggested the RX100 @ $649 MSPR.
But a V1 + kit for $379? Hmmm.. sounds like a good price for entry level/learning :)

The J1's autofocus will smoke that of any compact's including the RX100. At least in moderate to good light. In low light it will probably still win, just not in a blowout. And if your target is moving, so you are using continuous autofocus, the J1 will kill the RX100 and any other compact or mirrorless camera that doesn't also have PDAF, which is almost all of them right now.

A V1 for $379? That would be a no brainer because even if you used it for a few months and didn't like it, you could sell it for double your money.

When was this deal? That's an insane price.

This is another part of the puzzle. Shot to shot and button to focus times.

This is where P&S get me esp in low light.

care to elaborate where? I have been looking on his hot deals pages regularly and nothing has come close to that.

I see it now, I missed that link; it appears dead now.
