The D40x, D60, and D80 all share the same sensor and image processing chips. The D200 has a 4-channel output version, which allows for faster continuous shooting, as more data is moved off the chip faster.

given the timing of the D40x relative to the D40, i have to wonder if nikon goofed with the D40, not expecting canon to release a 10 MP 400D (thus leapfrogging the 30D), and so crammed a D80 into the D40 body as a stop-gap

They hardly crammed a D80 into the D40 body ;)

That aside, I think I see where you're coming from, but then from the number of D40s I've seen around, I don't think it did Nikon ANY harm having it out there. It's an extremely competent little performer if you've ever used one, and it's allowed Nikon to chase the real 'intro to DSLR crowd', while having the D40X to catch those who wanted the 10mp sensor, at a suitable premium of course ;)

ok, more like cutting down a D80 into a D40 body. whatever. the timing of it was still very unexpected.

I want my D90 (mini-D300) with AF-S 50mm f/1.2G VR!

has anyone figured out if thats real or fake yet

can an f/1.2 50 mm lens even fit on F-mount without resorting to some very complicated optical designs?

Why wouldn't it be able to? Canon makes a 50mm f/1.2L. I don't think the mounts are hugely different are they?

the Canon EF mount is physically larger. a Nikkor 50mm f/1.2L would likely require a complicated design, like the Nikkor 28mm f/1.4 did.

there was some other thread where people were talking about this and YES a F/1.2 will fit on the F-mount

forgot that nikon did make a 58 f/1.2 back in the day (noct, mmm). there was also a 50 f/1.2. they made a 50 f/1.1 for S mount.

i wonder if they can make an 85 f/1.2 or a 50 f/1.0? looks like the fastest 85 mm lens nikon has made for F mount is f/1.4. i wonder if they could match the 24 f/1.4 as well?

Nikon has made a manual-focus 50mm f/1.2 for the F-mount in the past, but it was an AI-S lens: http://www.nikonimaging.com/gl...mal/50mmf_12/index.htm

the issue with an autofocus version is finding enough room for both the AF contacts and the rear element.

Looks like a very solid performer.

ok wth. these dont look anywhere near as good as the ones posted earlier. These are nowhere near as sharp as the ones before (could be because of the lens used) and looks like these are noisier. Compare the pic of the stained glass window to the 1st pic in the other link (blond girl smiling). Both are taken at ISO 200 but blond girl pic has noticeably less noise in the darker areas.

I'm not quite sure; for now, take their shot settings with a grain of salt, because they decided to remove the EXIF information (very unprofessional IMO). So we can't say for sure that it is an ISO 200 shot, but it seems noisier than other ISO 200 shots on the same page.

As for the pictures being not as good as the previous samples: that is simply due to the person behind the camera, not the camera itself. If Nikon gave me a D3 and told me to take some sample shots, they would be nowhere near as good as these ones.

How fast do you guys think Nikon will continue to remove the in-body AF motor? The D60 doesn't have it. Do you think the D90 (well, I'm assuming that's Nikon's next body, logically) will have it?

Yes, or nobody will buy it. It's safe to assume that people buying a $1000+ body already have Nikon lenses (that are non-AFS).
