i'm harassing my father to give me his D70 and lens kits (i don't know if he has any, but i suppose he should). otherwise, i may buy one when it gets cheaper and the D70s is actually on the market. i'll do the firmware update on the D70 and i think i'd be good to go.

this isn't going to be something i'll be doing tomorrow, though, so if anyone wants to provide more feedback, i'm still listening :)

thanks all for your votes and comments!

My buddy is a pro dirt track photog and he just dumped his film for the D70. He says he got a package deal at Cameta Camera for around $1250.
He claims that gave him enough lens options to do anything he needed to do.
I'm starting to think *shudder* that I might go that way in the near future.
/me hugs his old, trusty Sony DSC-F707

Did you get a decent lens for it?

i hope so. we got the following:

f/1.8 50mm (nikkor)
f/4-5.6 70-300mm (sigma)
f/3.5-4.5 18-70mm (nikkor, comes with camera and has a $100 rebate)

also, i think my dad has an extra 24-200mm lens or something so we're gonna land ourselves that as well. (too bad he never parted with his camera) :p

yes
the kit lens (18-70) is great and i use it for 80% of the shooting i do with my D70

the 50mm is great as well so fast, so sharp adn so cheap, however i like my 35 f/2 better

and the sigma 70-300 is a great cheap zoom just to have for those that dont need it that often

i shoot too many Ducks so i needed to grab a better one

do you use a remote control (ML-L3)? or the microdrive CF cards? i heard from a d70 user that they work well and the 2.2GB cards go for $66.99 on ebay which imo is a steal.

Finally, i desperately need something larger than this 256mb cf card, can anyone confirm whether the 2.2gb cf cards are worth getting on ebay ?

The 50 and the 18-70 are great buys - excellent lenses for the money. I haven't shot with the Sigma so I don't really have an opinion. I have a Nikkor 70-210 f/4 as my tele zoom and it's great for when I don't feel like lugging around the primes. The 24-200 covers a lot of range but I'm unsure as to image quality (then again I'm spoiled by primes).

To get the most out of the D70, read the manual and learn how the manual controls operate. But as far as learning, there's no better teacher than experience. Just go out and shoot.

according to a fellow user, it works in the D70. i ordered one and will see if it works when both the camera and cards arrive. i'll also try it in my other camera (canon powershot s500) to see if it's compatible elsewhere and report back with my findings. :)

okay, we got it working. naturally, as it's a CF type II card, it won't work in cameras that accept CF type I only (like my s500 -- i wasn't aware of that at the time).

according to some findings i read on the nikon d70, the camera does accept microdrives but you should pay extra care to these devices as they are what you buy: micro harddrives. that said, if you dropped a harddrive, chances are you broke it. likewise, you need to handle these items carefully or they'll break. but if you just leave the microdrive in your camera, it should be fine -- because i'm not sure if you're planning on dropping the camera anytime soon.

for the price, it's a good deal. i'd go for it if you want big storage for a low cost, but bear in mind that there's a lot of care that needs to be taken if you plan to buy it.

one more thing: nikon recommends that you do not use a microdrive when upgrading firmware on the cameras (e.g. D70 to D70s, which i did). i had a spare 512MB CF card that i used instead, and it went well.

i'm glad that the d70 accepts both CF type I and CF type II cards. :)

by the way, it's advisable, if you have a microdrive, to get the pictures directly off the camera instead of physically handing the microdrive and inserting it into a CF reader.
