i know what dpreview says. i read a few things already. i know the D70 is upgradeable to the D70s with the firmware update. however, i want a biased opinion from those of you who have more experience than i.

my first priority is probably features. price comes in second, but i know how much these all cost (or will cost when introduced).

i'm just looking for opinions at the moment as i'm not really shopping for anything (yet). i'd like to hear your thoughts.

if you talk about the add-on lenses, be specific as i've never used anything but "body-only" cameras (i am the n00b). :) my goal here is more to learn than anything, and to take good pics in the process.

tia :)

update: got the d70, and it's awesome. got a bunch of lens kits, and they're awesome. :) anyone have any good d70/SLR resources?

I don't know if that "firmware" would make the 70 100% the same as the 70S since the 70S has a new metering system in it.

I think If you are a newbie......... get the D50 :)

But if you can afford the 70s.......... go for it :)

Cheers,

I don't think D70s has 3D Matrix II metering, only D50 has that.
After the new firmware, D70 is equal to D70s except LCD size & cable release.
If your priority is features, then your choice should be D70 or D70s.
If you can live with the slightly smaller LCD & IR remote release, the D70 is a tremendous bargain right now.
You will pay very close to MSRP for D70s right now. For the price, I would not even consider D50. It's too close to D70/D70s price.

D70/D70s with kit lens will do you good for now if you just starting. It's an excellent lens for the price.

i know canon makes the digital rebel, but at this point, it isn't one i'm considering. the three options i am considering are in the poll above.

after reading this, doesn't it seem like the D50 is a bit better than the D70?

Although quite similar in use and appearance there are some noteworthy differences between the D50 and D70, we have detailed all of the feature / specification differences in the table below. To summarize the most important; the D50 has improved auto focus especially in the area of motion tracking, it has a new auto AF mode (which automatically switches between single and continuous AF depending on the subject), it has a lower resolution metering sensor but that sensor is a newer generation than the one used in the D70 (and D70s) - spot metering circle is also larger, the maximum shutter speed is 1/4000 sec, continuous shooting is 2.5 fps, it has a better viewfinder eyecup, the LCD monitor has increased to 2.0" in size, the D50 takes SD cards (not CF), it's slightly smaller and lighter than the D70 and several features have been removed or simplified to make the camera easier to use.

key points: improved focus, AF mode, newer generation sensor, better viewfinder, LCD is larger.

i have no problems with the D50 taking SD cards either.

the rebel xt is probably the best choice unless you already have nikon lenses or somthing.

hmm, the rebel xt doesn't need additional lens kits?

edit: no, doesn't look that way...

i'm not looking for a canon, because if i get any camera in the future, it'll probably be a powershot S2 IS. i've just been very impressed with nikon quality and am considering that as well maybe when i make my eleventy billion dollars. i guess exposure to both cameras would give me the necessary hands-on experience that i want. but i think it's time to try nikon and not to go the direction of a canon digital rebel -- for now.

I like my D70. Just upgraded to the 2.0 firmware. Got the D70 with 18-70 lens kit for $900 after rebate.

i prob know more about this then he does, i woudl have answered this earlier, however i was at school learning about how to shoot Black on Black useing studio lights

anyway, the D50 is basically the same as the D70, it however is a lil slower in FPS, has a slower max shutter, takes SD and not CF, smaller image buffer, cant set a custom white balance, ONLY HAS 1 COMMAND DIAL that is a HUGE NEGATIVE, yes HUGE

no wireless flash, no viewfinder grid, no DOF preview,

ok, thanks anubis.

i know your opinion is that the D70s is better than the D70. if price was a factor here, and the D70s was $100 or more than the D70, is it really worth it to get the D70s? what would make the color matrix 2 and better LCD justifiable pricewise?

umm most liley nothing,

seeing as you can get a D70 for 800$ after rebate now for the body itself, that is what I woudl do, the New firmware more or less makes it a D70s, however some may find the new metering better, however the D70s metering kicks ass anyway, and a bigger LCD is always nice however not totally needed

depending on how much they tweaked teh sensor could swing it tho

i have a D70 and ill keep it till they relewase a D200 of sorts

If you can find a D70 for a good price then go for it. Otherwise there isn't much to distinguish between D70 and D70s (screen, cable, different eyecup, and that's about it). I wouldn't go for the D50, lacking in features.

For lenses, the 18-70 is a great kit lens. Best advice I can give for lenses is shoot with the kit lens and figure out what you need. Is it not long enough? Do you want to shoot wider? If anything I'd suggest looking into the 50/1.8 for indoor/low-light shooting, plus it's great for the price.
