The D5100 does not have commander mode with its built-in flash. You could use the Sb-600 as an optical slave (I think, I haven't done so), but if you are there are a lot of other older cheaper Nikon flashed that will do just as good.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

You are correct. I owned the D5100 before I traded up for the D7000. The former does not have built-in flash commander, whereas the D7000 does -- and it's nice. :) I have an SB-600 and I almost always use it off-camera.
