Would a "Nikon AF Nikkor 28-80mm 1: 3.3 - 5.6 G" be a good all around lens... mostly for my indoor shots?

And is this used lens worth about $100 if it's in good shape? This would be to compliment the 55-200mm that I will be getting with the camera when it arrives.

Thanks for your advice.

28mm = 42mm on your D50. Not quite wide enough for tight indoor spaces. It's a good performing lens, though; on par with the 18-55mm.

It runs about $50-$60 used, in good condition, max. Check eBay.

I'd sell the 55-200mm if you don't need the higher zoom range and pick up a 50mm f/1.8D and the 18-55mm kit lens. You'd get the wider end with the kit, and high quality portraits with the 50mm. You should get the 50mm at the very least, the optics are incredible for a $110 lens.

From everyone's comments, I'm kind of thinking that I'll probably try to get both the kit lens and the prime lens that you have suggested. I will probably only be able get one now and the other later.

Which one do you guys suggest as a first purchase given the 55-200mm that I will already have?

Definitely buy it. I had a D50 for a few weeks before I sold it (bought it as a profit making opportunity), and I was very impressed with the image quality and handling. Nikon has a great flash system (ok, the best), and I used that D50 with an SB600 with very good results.

For $300, it's a no-brainer. Get the Nikon kit lens for $50-75, and you have a very nice setup for a first-time DSLR.

Thanks. I did purchase the camera. It's on the way to me now. I have also just bought a Nikon 18-55mm lens (a used kit lens) for $80. I'm anxiously awaiting the arrival of everything so I can start experimenting and taking pictures!

If you haven't already, sign-up for Flickr and post some shots once you get the camera.
