Staples has the Nikon D40 SLR Digital Camera with 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor Lens for $399.99

I have one and love it. This is the lens I use the most. At this price don't think to hard.

Reading some reviews they say that Nikon left out an auto-focus driver from the body. How crucial is this feature when shooting with the included lens?

You'll have to pay more for a lens that has it built into it if you want AF.

Not crucial at all- the af motor is in the lens. If you want auto-focus on other lenses, you'll have to buy ones with the motor.

Agreed - this is an outstanding camera if your serious about jumping into the DSLR market without spending a ton of money. What it lacks in bells and whistles it makes up for in best in class (best in industry?) exposure metering and surprisingly 'pro' features for an entry level DSLR. This is NOT a point and shoot DSLR*. Great source of information at Ken Rockwell's. This remains his favorite even though it is hardly new.

I have the D40x and have NO regrets.

*When I say it's not a P&S DSLR, I mean there's no live view or any other gizmos that come with a typical P&S. Many people are freaked out when they find that live view is not a standard feature. The true nature of D40 is 'exposed' when you take it out of AUTO mode and start to play. If you have kids, you'll wonder how you ever got a shot in focus of them with your P&S.

got a class 6 8GB card that would be awesome for this (i got it for my point and shoot but i guess i'll wait till the unboxing of the D40 now!)

edit: crap its OOS

Since you brought it up, I'll say that tax evasion isn't helping your community's schools, fire department, police, medical resources, etc. I think there should be a stigma for doing it.

Camera buffs-any reccommendations for a point and shoot camera for novices? Our four year old Canon died recently (out of focus since a two foot fall in a padded bag). The camera is basically used for family photos, pictures of gatherings at my wife's store.

This camera sounds like overkill for us.

Canon SD series are the best IMO. I have a SD630 and a SD800 (both replaced by SD750, SD850 since)

more tax for New York State dirty politicians to eat up? sure, as if they don't eat up enough in my state income tax and taxing every single thing there is. and to make matters worse every year they take more and more taxes from NYC and never giving back anything to the city.

ask any new york city resident (including mayor bloomberg) and find me one that is comfortable with the way the state is spending their money. not one. i actually rather pay Connecticut state tax than New York State (I work in CT).

The D40 is in an entirely different league of cameras compared to the Canon SD point and shoots. The D40 is an SLR, meaning you have better high ISO quality, increased control your shots with manual options and the ability to switch lenses depending on situation.

Another thumbs up for the D40. I use 2 of them and I think they are incredible for the price. Great deal. I hear good things about the Olympus Evolts for the price though. I haven't used them personally. The Nikon family of lenses are a big factor for me though.

I second the recommendation of the Canon SD line- I have an SD1000 and love it.

Thanks for the two heads up on the Canon SD line-I'm now looking at the SD750 which seems to fit the bill and is cheap ($175, free shipping and can get a $40 free after MIR printer).

Our previous camera is a Canon A90 and Canon's service is beyond top-notch. A couple of years after we got it the LCD screen on the back screwed up. Based on a posting here I called Canon. Not only did they fix it for free, they were fast and paid the shipping both ways-for a camera way out of warranty. Canon's earned my continued loyalty.

yup Canon's warranty is pretty darn good (sorry for straying Off topic)

i have a SD630 and SD800 and they're still working rock solid, my friend confirmed he picked up the D40 for me so the SD630 will probably will go away (selling, giving to my gf's family or whatnot). anyhoo my sister also has a SD630, and she broke the battery door, they replaced it for free (i pay outgoing shipping) and got it back in less than a week. awesome service.

but if you didn't pay for the camera yet, I would recommend seriously checking out SD850 IS or the new SD870 IS, if you want to take photos of kids, and/or some evening or night shots, IS may not make your shots perfect but they'll be a big help. check into that.

i don't believe SD750 has IS.

Will Bestbuy Price-match this? I have a nice $200 Gift card and 10% off coupon that could make this a steal for me.

You'll probably have troubles as Costco is a membership club. Although if the camera is available online or if you have Costco card and if you are persistent enough you might get it.
