Nikon AF-s 35mm f/1.8G DX

I bloody called it. 35mm f/1.8G DX with AF-s (focusing motor inside the lens, but not true AF-S with fulltime manual override). It's the new lens to get for DX instead of the 50mm f/1.8. If I didn't already have an AF 35mm f/2D for my DX camera I would definitely get this lens.

EDIT: I stand corrected. The lens uses full-time manual override true AF-S. That and the pretty-good-looking MTF curve makes it more worth the $200 price tag. Perhaps even worth me selling my old AF 35mm f/2D.

Reasons they released a fast DX standard prime:

1) Their DX user base is huge. The D40 is their bestselling DSLR by a mile. They've wanted and needed a fast AF-S "standard" prime, and 35mm on a DX camera is 52.5mm.

2) Price: DX lenses are cheaper to produce. This lens will have a $199 USD MSRP. An FX version would have been 2-3x as much.

3) FX users already got their fast AF-S standard prime last year...the 50mm f/1.4G.

since it is AF-S, yes it will.

Wait, the DPReview article says the 35mm 1.8 has ring-type SWM and that AF on this lens has both M and M/A mode...doesn't that mean it's not "kit" AF-S?

nikon does 1 thing right (ok they've now done about 4 things right) and the canon people start proclaiming the imminent demise of the eos system

Lol huge thread about this on POTN last night too.

It's not exactly like Canon owners are left in the dust here. The EOS system has the EF 35mm f/2, which has been around long before the Nikon 35mm DX and is now available from Adorama for $229. It's not quite as fast focusing as the Nikon, but it's FF compatible, which the Nikon lens is not. Granted, it could use an update to ring-type USM focusing...but other than that, there's not much that needs to be changed.

There's also the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 for around $350, so Canon owners technically have at least 2 choices (not counting the 35L)

I wouldn't really say Canon has been the one who's behind...rather, Nikon's the one who is doing the catch-up work in the area of fast primes. Nikon still needs to get a move on and update their f/1.4 professional primes and maybe introduce some f/1.2 primes with SWM to compete with Canon in that area...

Nikon has had the AF 35mm f/2D for a while. But yeah, we do need an AF-S 28mm f/1.4G.
