I think you should have to stop to use it until everyone has a reliable, hands free way to talk AND dial the phone.

Most people don't have a problem carrying on a conversation with the passenger next to them, but get distracted talking on a cell. I think it's because people are so used to talking on the phone at home or in a relaxed environment, that they just associate talking on the phone with not paying much attention to anything else. Once you put a phone to your ear, you kinda get in that phone zone :)

What the hell is it going to take before we have a sensible law stating "no cell phone use in a moving vehicle"?

Sounds fine, but the statistics bear out that cell phone usage is not the number one cause of car accidents. It's eating food, followed closely by applying makeup, changing the radio station, reading books or maps, and a few others. Cell phones are seventh or eighth on the list. If you're going to make a law to ban activities while driving, be smart and ban the more dangerous ones as well.

Yzzim:

I thought the bill died in the Connecticut legislature but I could be wrong.

One of the worst places is downtown parking garages. Idiots can't wait three minutes to get to their office and yack on the phone blissfully going around corners taking BOTH lanes (up and down). This happens to me on a regular basis-probably 50% of the time I go out mid-day.

It would be stupid to make a new law just for cell phones and driving. It is bad enough that the government chooses whether we wear safety belts or not.

What about people that eat food while driving? or people that listen to really loud music? or people that try to read magazines at redlights?

There's always going to be car accidents - how much of an inconvenience should safe driving be?

Most people can talk on a cell phone and drive safely at the same time.

BTW, car manufacturers will start building hands-free kits right into the cars as soon as they can collaborate with cellphone makers on a standard

By the way, if I remember correctly, studies suggest that hands free kits are not much better than standard phones. The only way to eliminate the added risk of a cell phone is to eliminate the cell phone period, hands free or not.

By the way, I talk on the phone sometimes while driving, but try not to.
