Stick a little NOS sticker on the side, add a giant spoiler, and boom, you're running in the Olympics. :)

But they did mention the ability to customize certain components. The new shoe design was mainly intended for athletes, especially runners. Since everything in the shoe is glued, it is hard if not a hassle for a part to get replace. Most will just throw it away and get a new pair.

Hmm.. I can see it now. Nike's new customizable show with optional rollerblad kit, ski kit, snowboarding kit, shox kit, led kit, etc. Add stickers to make your shoes run faster.

you've got it backwards.

Meh, don't think its a very good idea. Shoes are supposed to be uniform, homogenous, well built to provide the ultimate support and cushioning. Having shoes with replaceable components means sacrificng some of the support for ease of upgradability. I doubt the shoes themselves will be as comfortable or as supportive as entry-level normal shoes.

Of course, being a runner, I have a certain elitist attitude towards shoes, so nevermind me.

First of all, carbon fiber alone is pretty flimsy. It needs to be epoxied, and then you'll have a Dutch footsheath instead of a contemporary shoe.

i want LEDs, halogen white out headlights, fan cooling, and a 2000w sub in each shoe, oh and a dvd player with an LCD screen, that is all somehow shielded from the 50LB magnets im dragging around in each shoe.

you both a forgetting the other side of the graph...supply.

if supply and demand are high, price equilibrium
if supply is high and demand is low, prices go down
if supply is low and demand is low, price equilibirum
if supply is low and demand is high, prices go up

the only reason they're spending $$$ designing these things is so you can them more $$$, not so you can save $ by "repairing" your shoes instead of buying new ones

Actually, this whole Nike thing sounds like a really scary idea to me. Who knows, given enough time, people will probubly start ricing out their shoes. :Q

I believe Qacer's mistake was confusing cost with price. In many industries, per unit cost goes down as manufacturing volume increases, regardless of consumer demand - microelectronics being most notable.

You can predict the price waves of just about any new emerging technology.
rolleye.gif

1) Create a new product.
2) Keep supply low and prices up while manufacturing processes improve.
3) Sudden surge of demand from consumers cause facilities to freak out and increase unit volume 2000%
5) Demand wanes and companies are left with warehouses of unsold units.
6) Prices tumble.

Memory modules and LCD panels being the most recent example.
