I generally dislike metal because it's all so stale. I HATE death metal and modern radio "metal" (try using more than two riffs, you f*cking pussies). But my favorite band of all-time is a metal band (Blind Guardian) that uses a ton of melody and sweeping choruses. I really dig melodic and symphonic sounds, and as a result Nightwish was recommended to me.

I checked out their website and listened to some samples. "Planet Hell" from their latest album sounds very cool. It has a crazy intense male singer, orchestal sounds, a badass metal bust-in part, and operatic chick vocals. I really don't know what else I could ask for. So I bought that album (Once) and their previous album (Century Child - I think). I anxiously await their arrival.

Anyway, I noticed that there seems to be a few Nightwish fans here (mostly they come out of hiding to make fun of the people that think Evanescence is good), so I was just hoping to hear some more about them and why you like them.

every evanescence thread mentions nightwish... so I demo'd their stuff from their site (about 30 songs)... and I can't help but think I'm at the opera. Not my taste. She's good... for opera (which she was studying to do, as I understand it).

I didn't hear a male singer before... after listening to that demo... I stand by my opinion.
 
I bought Once as my first nightwish, some months ago. Great music, but still not my favorite band. Saturnus > * in goth/doom.
 
For being as huge a metal fan as I am, I must admit that I do not like Nightwish. I have nothing against them, I'm not gonna go around saying they suck, because they seem to be very talented, but I just cannot stand the vocals. She's so piercing and shrill. If you do like Nightwish, though, you might also like Therion, Lacuna Coil, or the Gathering. (Therion is the only group of those that I like though 😉)

Thanks for references! I know of Lacuna Coil, and I think they're alright. I have not heard of the other two though. I'll check them out.
