You’re looking at a political party that has lost the popular vote in five of the past six elections; whose one winning presidential candidate achieved the White House thanks to a fluke; and whose prospects for the future seem doomed by demography and geography.

Its not that the Dems are cocky its that the Republicans are clueless. Listening to them their "big plan" to capture the hispanic vote is to find some hispanic candidates. Yet, hispanics have been shown not to vote for hispanic candidates who espouse Republican views.

So, basically, we are realistically optomistic.

I like the comments the author makes about Republicans needing to shutup the Limbaugh and Hannity talking heads. And nominating and running candidates that don't cater to the far right. Both of these things alienate the moderates which gave Obama both of his wins. Both of those things makes the Republican party into something saner.

Here's some important parts you forgot to quote:

So how did Democrats work themselves out of their trough and pick that electoral lock? One big answer was Bill Clinton, who in his 1992 campaign staged a frontal challenge to Democratic orthodoxies. The American people, he said, trust us with neither their safety nor their money. He took on issues from welfare to free trade to the hot-button question of crime, often appearing in front of a “wall of blue” of police officers. He embraced the death penalty, and said of abortion that it should be “safe, legal and rare.” It was not always attractive—he went back to Arkansas to preside over the execution of a mentally challenged convict—but he did manage to alter voters’ ideas of what Democrats stood for.

In this sense, Mitt Romney campaigned as the “anti-Clinton.” Not once did he say to the base of his party, "You’re wrong about this issue; here’s why." No doubt he and his campaign concluded that he could not win the nomination with a direct challenge. My strong hunch is that a GOP candidate in 2016 will have to do just that if he or she is to have a chance in November.

A second answer is that Republicans, like Democrats before them, are bleeding from self-inflicted wounds. Just as Democrats in the ’70s and ’80s competed with each other in primaries in staking out positions to gratify the party’s liberal-left base, Republican candidates in the primaries lunged for positions—from immigration to social issues—guaranteed to alienate them from the middle.

And here is a crucial parallel to what Democrats had to learn in the late 1980s: If voters believe you do not respect their values, they will not care much about your programs. Back then, the problem for Democrats was a sense that they had contempt for traditional values. Today, the problem for Republicans is that when people hear Rush Limbaugh call a young woman a “slut” or watch Sheriff Joe Arpaio wage a campaign against Hispanics, they think they’re hearing the voice of the Republican rank and file.

Exactly. All the Republicans will have to do to win another election is moderate their position on immigration, end the war on women, and raise taxes on the wealthy.

Basically, become Democrats. Welcome to the 21st century guys.

Except that waging the war on women caused Romney to gain 3% of the woman vote.

EDIT: And Republicans are completely moderate on immigration. Failing to pandering to illegal foreign invaders is not an extremist position.

link......OK thats a 3% gain from what...1% to 4%....hmmmmm
As Democrats we will let you have that 3% if it means you never win the White House again....hahaha
That is a fair trade....

Republicans can make a good start by loudly and unequivically denouncing extremists in their party

You mean the made up by the left war on women?

Maybe you dem's can stop lieing.

And there are far fewer radical right positions on immigration, then far left positions on immigration.

The current left plan w/support from latinos is "Let the law breakers get a free pass".

Talk about pandering.

43%->46%

4 years of pandering to women and claiming the Republicans are waging a "war on women" resulted in Obama losing support among women.

The left-wing position on illegal immigration is borderline treason.

Look at the basic breakdown of Mr. Obama’s victory, according to exit polls (which may yet be revised). He won 93 percent of African-Americans, 71 percent of Hispanics, and 73 percent of Asians. He took 55 percent of the overall female vote, down only one percentage point from his comparable 2008 showing.

The left-wing position on illegal immigration is borderline treason.

Only to you. This country was founded on immigration, and hundreds of thousands, if not millions enter here during the first 125 years of this nations existence. And if the republicans at least had the balls to do what the 'W' wanted, we would be in a better spot now.

So you have slightly different numbers for your poll. Still showing that after 4 years of pandering and making up a "war on women" that Obama still lost support among women.

How is giving aid and comfort to illegal foreign invaders not treason?

And here they are, ladies and gentlemen, the Republican Party hard at work defending the positions that lost them the election and even arguing how those positions actually got them more votes!

Its not just an alternate reality, its an alternate reality and couple galaxies away from reality.

Look at the article in the OP. It talks about how the Democrats were able to win the white house when they moved to the center and embraced things like welfare reform.

Then the rest of the thread is conservatives saying they don't need to change anything. It's actually quite hilarious.

1% of the vote is probably the margin of error of the exit poll. Essentially he won the same percentage.

So now they are invaders. Why are we not pillorying the corporations and small businessmen that support these policies for their own economic welfare. If the corporations and business both large and small do not want these "invaders" they would not employ them. Place the blame where it squarely belongs on business. Remember under Obama, the Government has deported more illegal "invaders" faster in the past 4 years, then Bush did.

The left's "Conservatives hate immigrants" is the biggest lie that they keep trying to perpetuate. Conservatives have zero problem with immigration at all, it is ILLEGAL immigration that is the problem. Why can't the left stop lying about this?

That is not really true. Conservatives love illegal immigrants because their overlord and masters love it. As I mentioned before. If corporations and business (large and small) did not employ illegal immigrants for their economic selfishness, then the argument over illegal immigrants would be much more believable.

Those people entered the country LEGALLY.

We also did not have generous welfare programs back then like we do today. They had to work hard or starve.

Oh? Remember the primary source of immigration information was .. The primary source of data on immigration to the United States is the Passenger Lists.

The Available Data Sources
The primary source of data on immigration to the United States is the Passenger Lists, though U.S. and state census materials, Congressional reports, and company records also contain material on immigrants. In addition, the Integrated Public Use Microdata Series (IPUMS) web site at the University of Minnesota (http://www.ipums.umn.edu/usa/) contains data samples drawn from a number of federal censuses. Since the samples are of individuals and families, the site is useful in immigration research. A number of the countries from which the immigrants left also kept records about the individuals. Many of these records were originally summarized in Ferenczi (1970). Although records from other countries are useful for some purposes, the U.S. records are generally viewed as more complete, especially for the period before 1870.

http://eh.net/encyclopedia/article/cohn.immigration.us

The US relied on the record keeping of pursers, and at what point did the become legal citizens? Most did not, it was their children born here that became citizens. Now were they illegal or legal is open to debate. But the same argument could be made that if we had all the coyotes just hand over a list as they headed back to Mexico for the next batch of immigrants, they would essentially be doing the same thing as pursers did in the 1800's.

^^ this

The Dems were the part out of favor and had to work to get back.
Part by changing and part by Republican overconfidence.

The same can happen again. Many of the Democrat champions here either were not around or have a short memory.

Voters when they get frustrated will turn on the party in charge and quickly.

Why is it the liberals seem to think that corporations should be required to enforce our immigration laws by police should be prohibited from doing so?
