Nigerian scammers have moved on to snail mail?!

I won 125,000 dollars. The taxes can't just be deducted, so I was sent a check - in the regular mail - for $4xxx, and have to Western Union the amount of the tax to the guy in charge of the account. 😛

92 cents postage spent on me. Profits must be up for the scammers.

If the check comes via USPS, then it becomes mail fraud.
Let them take it from there.

I got some letter for a pyramid scheme in the mail for Texas the other day. I get a lot of junk mail, but that was a first. It looked like he had hand written in his address over whoever had it first and then photocopied it. Apparently not only people with computers are suckers.

I do wonder where he got my address from though.

Wait so they gave you 4 grand or are you suppose to mail them a check?

hint: the cheque is bogus.

Sell it to someone.

worth a shot

/facepalm

Doesn't surprise me in the least. Ebay idiots regularly pay greater than new retail prices for used goods so this wouldn't even qualify on the bad deal scale I've seen.

It is the reason I stopped even going there....some moron is always going to bid shit up beyond street price so its just a waste of my time.

Phone Book and some darts?

Like 3 years back, we got a letter in the mail that said we won some lottery in Europe worth 100 million (reside in Canada). The letter was full of spelling/grammatical mistakes and didn't even have a name on it.

I received one about 3 weeks ago that came from England. Saying one of my relatives with the same last name but only had first and middle initial had died in '99 and there is $20 million to be claimed. I just thrashed the letter.

I didn't want to respond as that would confirm my address and name. They had hand written my name and address on the envelope too.

Just weird.

They know your name and are coming for you while you sleep.

Not worth wasting the taxpayer's money - it came to my house via USPS, but was mailed from out of the country, no return address. If I'm bored, I'll take it up to my postmaster tomorrow morning. Maybe she'll find it entertaining.

I've thought about pursuing it a little more though. Maybe call the number (make sure I'm not going to get destroyed for phone charges though - use a calling card or something) and give them a hard luck story:

"Just when I thought my luck had turned, I experienced more misfortune. I had recently gone through a tragedy and lost everything I owned. All of my bank accounts were closed. I went to the bank to see about depositing the bank and paying my tax, but the bank said I can't cash checks there without an account. The bank manager, a good friend of mine, said that if I deposited $20, I could open an account. And, once that account was opened, they would allow me to deposit the check and withdraw the amount of the tax, but that I'd have to leave the remainder of the deposit in the bank. I did not tell them that I had won the money, per your request. Could you please send me a $20 bill in the mail so that I can open the account? I assure you, once I get my $125,000, I will be able to repay you back, plus interest."

Of course... they would have my real address...

Maybe the gift card includes tax. 😛

Seriously though, I don't know if any places do this anymore in this age of fancy gift cards, but back in the day of gift certificates I know some places used to charge the buyer of the gift certificate the tax and then there would be no tax when the GC was used.
