A lot of people bust these scams. The reason they're referred to as "Nigerian Scams" is because it got popularized by people posing as a Nigerian Prince. Has next to nothing to do with who is actually pulling the scam off, although quite a bit of them do come through Nigeria.

Mostly because of the Nigerian Prince thing, but also due to the fact that many of the scams originally were perpetuated through Great Britain by... wait for it... Nigerian immigrants.

why is it called a Nigerian scam anway? clearly its not from Nigeria.

"The seven Israelis suspected of scamming tens of millions of dollars from U.S. pensioners in a so-called "Nigerian scam" can be extradited to the United States to face trial there, the Jerusalem District Court ruled on Wednesday."

I don't see why the newspaper referred to this as a "Nigerian Scam".

Calling people and telling them they won the lottery etc is different from the actual Nigerian scam.

The Nigerian scam is basically phishing for your bank acct numbers, and done via email not a telephone call.

this probably shouldn't be a crime anyway. if you're dumb enough to give away thousands of dollars to strangers based on phone calls and emails, then you probably deserved to scammed.

Perhaps the expression "Nigerian scam" is, in fact, being used as a broad shorthand for a lot of fraud based crimes and confidence games nowadays. If so, I'd kind of be annoyed by that if I was Nigerian.

Didn't you read your article. They were scamming old people. Don't be a douchebag.
Aren't you one of the P&N posters who is anti-Israeli? Is that why you posted this?

The defendants are suspected of building a sophisticated crime network to defraud elderly American pensioners.

The question is, how is this in any way related to any world Israeli v USA problems?

Any nation on earth has its criminal and con man class, and they can use the internet to reach beyond their borders to scam citizens of every country on earth. The USA is plagued with Russians Mafia type activity, Chinese tongs, our own Mafia, our own homegrown scam artists like Enron and Bernie Madoff, infamous Nigerian scams from Nigeria, and now stop the presses Israeli con men join in to share the spoils.

Now if Israel had protected its con men from arrest and extradition to the USA it might be one thing, but Israel did the right thing and extradited its rascals and scam artists to the USA to face the music. Tell me again why we can or should blame Israel here?

And in fact, Israel has provided far above average co-operation to the USA in this given thread case as far as I can see.

Of course it is. Never mind that his own article mentions that these scammers were arrested by Israeli police, and extradited to the U.S. by an Israeli court, it's enough for him that "Jews did it." That's what makes it newsworthy to him.

somebody needs to be blamed
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In that case blame the great American showman P.T. Barnum, who pointed out there is a sucker born every minute and two born everyday to fleece them.

Some people are just no damn good, its a human problem as old as time and the invention of dirt. Some blame Eve for eating the apple and others blame the apple of temptation.

Don't push, don't shove, every nation has some.

Because the "419" came from the Nigerian penal code.
Nigerians certainly haven't been the only ones doing it, they just get the credit.

Yes allowing fraud would do wonders for consumer faith in the economy. I'm sure consumer spending would double.
