Nicest way to tell a coworker I am engaged?

A very nice IT guy came by my cube yesterday looking for my coworker, who was not in. He asked what our division does, and we chatted for a little bit. I have a mini-shrine of pictures of my fiance on my cubicle wall, but wasn't sure he saw it.

The next day, he called and asked what I was doing after work. Apparently he had "an extra ticket to see Fantastic Four" and was wondering if I would like to join him.

I told him I had to volunteer that night (which I did), and he said, "Maybe some other time."

I'm assuming he was asking me out on a date v. "I want to get to know you better as a friend," and don't want things to get awkward. What would be the most polite/non-awkward way of letting him know that I am not available?

I was thinking I could shoot him a quick e-mail asking him if he'd like to hang out with my fiance and I sometime, but if that's not the best idea I'm open to suggestions.

EDIT/UPDATE: All is well. My coworker actually met my fiance this weekend at a computer sale; they shook hands, no hard feelings. :)

Why don't you just tell him you're engaged? If it were me, I wouldn't take it as an insult; it's just fact.

If he asks again, just say "Sorry, I have plans with my fiance tonight. I can't make it."

he must be stupid. just tell him you are getting married and you'll invite him to the wedding if he brings a nice present and a date

True, it's good to know you wouldn't be offended/insulted. I'm not sure how to just bring it up, though - "Hi, want to go see a movie?" "Sorry, I'm engaged."

Does that flow okay?

How the hell do you end up with an extra ticket for a movie? Accidentally said you want to buy 2 instead of one?

I can name one guy who will be crying alone through a crappy movie tonight.

dont do the whole "mentioning your fiance" thing...that feels terible to hear. In all honesty next time he asks just be honest "Id love to go, but you DO know im enganged right?" or something like that....that you like him as a friend but he needs to know. But i am not a fan of someone just talking about their fiancee around the person interested in them...hoping they get the idea

I like that one a lot! :) Thanks hypn0tik, if anything like it happens again I'll say that.

I agree, you could tell him straight out.

But if you're not sure if he's asking you out on a date, you could just tell him you have plans with your fiance

Yes, I have a ring on my left finger. I didn't want to hold it up and say, "Ring, b!tch." :p I think most guys don't notice engagement rings/jewelry, though?

Say you can't go that night because you're getting sized for your wedding dress?

Awwww. :(

He seems like a really nice guy, if I had single girlfriends I might see if we could go out on a double date.

An "extra ticket" for a movie? What a dork. Punch him in the eye with your diamond ring, he'll figure it out. :p

why tell him he is nice? leave that part out. he probably isn't as nice as he seems anyway

you could always get a pirate or ninja to "tell him"
