Best water effect has to be from my fountain in the back garden. Talk about realism....

Morrowinds water effects are very nice indeed, UT2k4 isnt too bad imo. Farcry... I cant be bothered to waste money on. More important things to save up for.

Farcry has the best I've seen. Here's a couple of shots at night in the game. Notice the realistic reflections and how the water laps the beach.

yeah but u dont play UT to look at the water effects do you?.........hell if it slows down the FPS then i dont want it....u play UT to frag every mofo u see 🙂 and u need speed for that

Actually, the way Far Cry's water "laps at the shore" is just an animated texture effect (or something that looks exactly like it) and is not impressive at all. You can sit there and watch the texture stretch, return, stretch, return, just like a rubber band. Far Cry's water, IMO is severely overrated. It looks too much like a swimming pool to be a tropical sea. Anyway, I concur with the getn who noted to wait for vertex AND pixel shaded water. That's when shit is going to get truly impressive.

What about the water in HL2? That reacts really well to things being trown in it, or bullets going through it in the techdemo.... Plus in the other techdemo (in the cave) its got some lovely shimmering effects and follows that physics law (cant remember the name) where it refracts proerly while looking into the water...

refraction?

oh yeah, but we'll have to wait until Q1 2005 for HL2, anyways.

Jetway 5200

It's better than a Radeon 9100, and even a 9600 in some tests!
No, really!
Why don't you believe me?
Benchmarks?
I don't need those, I have fanboyism!

Half Life 2 demos by far.

I just tried the FarCry demo at max details and although the water seems good from above, it looks horrible and flat swimming or underwater.

From what I remember Unreal/II had the best in game water.

Unreal 1's animated texture water layed the smack down when it came out, and remained king for a good 18 months after that.

Man, the first iteration of that engine was so ahead of it's time...

For those of you who havn't played Joint Ops...the water is pretty nice. It varies in clarity and "muddiness" and splashes nicely and all that too.

I'm excited to see the eventual use of vertex mapping in water generation. most games now render the ripples onto a flat texture...if you're swimming, the horizon still looks like a flat line. with vertex mapping we may get real ripples!

Joint Operations is out?!?!?! WTF didn't I know that?

I don't particularly like the water in the Far Cry demo... it doesn't look real... it's such a bright blue it looks totally fake. The Joint Operations water looks worse though... doesn't look like they make very good use of DX9 shaders since there's no waves or wake when you run through it. Morrowind's water looks MUCH better than JO's. HL2's is decent from what I've seen in the Bink videos... we'll see when it's released though.

agreed it looks nice...but there is still a very noticeable pattern in that second screen
