That's true, but those those triangle wing eurojets (mirage, grippen, eurofighter) are super capable for a fraction of the cost.

The mainstay of the USAF are jets like the F-15,16,18, and JSF (F-35?). None of these aircraft have an advantage over these eurojets in a close-in fight, but they generally have much greater range.

The range thing dates back to WWII, where the US built fighters primarily to escort long range bombers, while the british, russian, and german fighters were built to defend against bomber attacks - the P-51, 47, and 38 had maximum ranges that were orders of magnitude higher than any other fighter aircraft of the war.

The US is not anticipating having to scramble jets at a short notice for short interception missions - we don't have any neighbors that pose a threat like that, but countries in europe lived in the shadow of soviet russia and they did need point defense.

The planes were built to fill different roles.
