Windham - Zip 12496 mountains and lots of them. The upside is it's quiet and nice. The downside is the closest major city of Catskill is 25miles away. Thruway is 24 miles and the closest Major city which is Albany is 55 miles if you go up the thruway and 45 miles if you go via back roads.

Is that where Windham ski resort is?

If so, I have been there a time or two, and it is a nice little town.

Check out various places Allegany or Cattaraugus county. Real estate is cheap here; I purchased a smaller 4 bedroom home with a barn and 18 acres for about 45k earlier this year. The only downside is that property values are not rising like they are everywhere else... in fact, in Alleg. county, the average property value actually fell. On the other hand, this keeps the dream of owning a home very realistic in communities with very little industry. I'm not sure what major cities offer that smaller cities don't. Maybe I'm missing out on some wonderful part of living that I don't know exists. But, last night, after a small party for the kids (post homecoming party), we took a walk to the top of our hill and looked out at the stars away from the house lights.. One of the girls, who is from a rural area and used to stars, still was amazed at the shear number of stars visible out here. It's absolutely gorgeous here, almost year round (I do find the spring thaw to be a bit ugly for a few weeks)

However, what do you do? Unless you're retired, options are fairly limited for employment. Well, you could always work at the cheese factory, or for a dairy...

I work in the local county parks dept. My wife is a Nurse. I can land a job anywhere she will need to be semi close to a hospital. I really really want to own some land and all that stuff man. Im just like you. I want to live off the land so to speak.

While nurse's salaries are low in this area, they are still among the best paid jobs that are available - they're always looking for nurses. Check out the Cuba area 14727. Good school district too. (not that I'm partial or anything ;) )

I was in Clyde once for a family reunion. Very small town north of the finger lakes and it was pretty nice. 14433 zip according to google.

Northern NY is kind of weird...there's a lot of little towns that are just so far out it's not even funny. Go southwest of Albany and you'll see what I mean, just miles and miles of nothing but roads. It'd take an hour to get anywhere decent.

Stick close to the major areas, places like Albany or Lake George are nice, you can get decent property a little ways out and still have access to everything you need.

Upstate NY, eh? I hope that you like getting a LOT more snow than you're getting now :)

Personally, I wouldn't want to go north of Putnam or Orange counties, but that's just my personal opinion. Westchester is awesome, though, if you can stand the insane cost of living.

We don't live too far from there now. Down in Galway, near Amsterdam. I really like this area. Everybody is so friendly and normal compared to South Carolina, and the weather is so much nicer.

Been living up here since June. Unfortunately moving again sometime between Nov 11th and mid Feb to either Virginia or Washington, we don't know yet. (Work related.)

I'm hoping for Washington though. I love the rain and cold and I've never lived on the west coast.
