how great is the Escort Passport 7500? I mean have you guys even used another radar detector? I have a cheap Uniden radar detector that's about 4 years old and I thought it was all but since I've never used any other radar detector I'd be a poor judge.

I've been looking to purchase a Bearcat (not Beartracker), which picks up the radio of cop cars up to 3 miles away, however since I usually drive in the I don't know if that'd help me too well. Does anyone have an experience with the BearCat BCT-10?? That's the little portable one meant for car windshields.

I'd love to buy a new radar detector if I was pretty sure it'd work much better than my current radar detector. I've also been wanting to buy a louder one, with the radio up i can barely hear mine.

<< "but you got smart and matched my speed and then saw the cop on the other side of the hill. " >>

does it really work that well that it'll pick up signals clearly over hills?? I've gotten two tickets that way, well one was on the other side of a hill, the other on the other side of a corner.

How well does it prevent false signals?

Thanks for answering my questions, god it'd be great to get a radar detector that *really* worked, I'm tired of being targeted around campus, have actually seen cops get out of their cars and pull a temporary speed limit sign out of their trunk and set it up with sand bags *just* to rip off poor college students!! It's unreal what they can get away with!!!!!!

LOL can anyone make up their mind on radar detectors??

beat-your-speeding-ticket.com loved the WHISTLER DE 1670 but hated the Valentine one and the Cobra ESD 6700 being the second choice, the ESCORT PASSPORT 7500 was just listed as the "most popular of the passport models".

www.radartest.com loved the BEL 980, with the Escort Passport 7500 being way down the list and about the Whistler 1670 they said "needs better Ka sensitivity; uncompetitive price vs. performance compared to newer models"

epinions.com had only two users reviews of the Escort Passport 7500, both liked it but one had some dislikes. They didn't have anything to say about the WHISTLER DE 1670 but did have 3 for the
Whistler DE1660 giving it a 3.5 stars (out of 5) and 2 reviews for the Whistler DE1650, giving it 5 stars.

Go figure, so much for reviews . . .

oh yeah, 14 people at carreview.com seem to love the Escort Passport 7500, gave it a total of 4.43

I also found out what detector i have, the Uniden 6199SWS. technically it does provide 360 protection, but i popped the case and found out they're lying, their's no rear radar detector and rear laser detection is done by a piece of clear plastic that loops around to the laser detector, i would be surprised if it really worked.

whoa, after reading the reviews of the Valentine One i'm almost hooked, 36 people at carreview.com gave it a perfect 5 out of 5! They can't all be fake posts can they? I wouldn't mind spending $400 for a radar detector if I could be absolutely sure it'd work very well, besides some of the reviews say they bought their Valentine One in the early 90s and they're still happy with it, i can't say that about my 4 year old radar detector, it'd be nice to buy a radar detector now and still be happy with it 10 years from now! Not many items out there now days that you can say "I bought this ten years ago and it's still better than anything on the market".

why doesn't some of the other manufactures come out with a radar detector with arrows? Don't tell me they patented something so simple.

well, I'm currently using V1 and have had the Passport.
I've tried BEL, Uniden, and, Escort; V1 is just way better as far as sensitivity is concerned. I could detect radars 2 to 3 time further than all other detector that I've experienced.
One drawback: it's city mode is not very useful. I found limited use in city environment since it goes off everytime I drive pass supermarkets, gas stations, etc. I mainly use it when I drive across towns in rural highways(almost every weekend), and this is where the full capability of V1 really shows.

so you're saying you would not recommend the Valentine 1 for city (st. louis) driving?

is the Escort Passport 7500 better than the Valentine 1 at distinguishing false radar signals from real signals?

wow i started a little discussion :)

SuperRob: It 'saved me' because I was speeding before the LIDAR (laser) alarm went off, and quickly slowed down before I got into the officers targeting range.

jhassi: I've used a couple of other detectors before... not a lot but I've ridden with quite a few people who have them. The Valentine One, a couple of Whistler and Unidens, a cheap Fuzzbuster, a nicer Cobra, and a nicer Bell. Of course I couldn't name the models off for you, but the ones I've owned before are a cheap (~$90) Fuzzbuster and a Uniden from like 1989 :)

To ANYONE who is considering the Passport 7500: it's worth trying. Escort is a really nice company with friendly people, and they have a 30-day money back garuntee just in case (because most stores, for some reason, wont let you return RD's). From my experiance with the V1, it seems that it is more likely to pick up signals, but the 7500 seems more likely to pick up REAL signals. The V1's range is better but I'd say it gets more false alarms because of its sensitivity. If you have $400-$500 to spend, try the V1, then the 7500 and see which one works best for you... Otherwise, I'd say go for the 7500. It seems (to me) like a better 'city' and 'suburb' choice than the V1, but highway detection is great too. Plus, the menu system and options you can set make it really nice for people who don't like defaults (and if your on Anandtech, then I know its YOU! :) )
As far as price goes, you won't find a 7500 for less than $230... or more than about that, either. If you pay any more than $230 for a 7500 then you got 'jacked' :) I got mine from BestBuy after not finding a better price anywhere else.

If you have any questions about the 7500 feel free to email me.

Speed doesn't kill, difference in speed kills, that why limit access highways, have such high speed limits. To reduce fatalities the minimum should be raised. (Anyone been on I-75 on Labor Day Weekend) I rest my case. I have never seen so many close calls with RVs doing 40-45mph. If you CAN'T or are UNWILLING to drive atleast 60, you should be PROHIBITED from the Limited Acess Highways.

On the topic of radars. They pose moral delemias, their purpose is to allow people to break they law, and then be told when not to break the law. IF this were simply the case, I would never buy a radar. However there is more to it than that. Take the fairness of police. On a vacation, I recently recieved a ticket for 67 in 55. However the following day, I watched another person pass me at the exact same spot doing 70+, right by the officer. The officer never even moved. Then the same week I was passed the same officer, who was doing about 80some w/o flashers (what about setting an example?). $80 in fines is fine, but for a 19 year old driving a 99 SVT, the insurance hurts like crazy. Now I am scared to even hit 80 on wide open straights. I need a radar. "Oh well that just my opinion I could be wrong"

Radar/Laser detectors suck. If you're looking at one that's going for about $50, you're in for some big surprise. A friend of mine bought his for a little over $100 and it NEVER worked. We drove my cops on purpose and we got nothing on the detector. I believe you can only get a reading if a cop is pointing his speed detector at you but by then, it's too late if you're speeding so what's the point? I would save your money on this one.

Was reading the latest issue of ... Automobile or something like that ... the one with the article about the Lap of America Race, basically the CannonBall run race. Anyways, this guy was talking about his setup and the radar detector of his choice he was using ...

a Valentine One detector if I remember correctly. So, if this industry guy used this for the Lap of America then i'm assuming it's good to say the least.

I totally agree with geoffct's bit about people who are not willing to drive at least 60 on the highways should be banned/ticketed. I've seen those "Minimum speed limit XX" signs before, but when it's rush hour and the road is a parking lot, you don't see the cops walking around handing out tickets do you? (Not that I would want that) Bah, I was going to say a bunch of other stuff here, but never mind. And you know what else I hate? Those damn bastards that drive slow in the left lane, seemingly to "enforce the speed limit" or some crap. Especially when there's no one around them... WHAT THE HELL?!?!? MOVE THE HELL OVER DUMBASS!!! Slower traffic keep right, it's the law (at least in Texas).

Jhassi, thanks for quoting me :) Anyway, in regards to the effectiveness of the Passport 7500 over hills, I have a couple things to say. First is, usually detectors rely on the signal bouncing off of things in order to pick up a signal that's not aimed directly at you. Usually the "over the hill" performance is a lot better when there are a good number of cars on the road, especially semis. I've noticed a few times than when a semi comes over a hill heading towards me I can pick up a cop from a LONG way away... when the semi gets fully on my side of the hill the signal goes away, but then when I crest the hill I pick it up again. Also, if you're in a somewhat urban setting, the radar signal likes to bounce off of those big green signs telling you how many miles it is to the next 2 or 3 exits. I've also noticed that over a somewhat "naked" landscape with hills, it'll still pick 'em up from a good distance, especially if you're on the highest hill for the next few hills or so. Sometimes you'll get the stupid cops that think they're smart and they aim their radar directly across the roadway (thinking you won't pick them up that way) Well, you won't... but you can also drive about 150mph right by them and it'll still register as 70 or so (don't remember the exact numbers, but go learn about the cosine effect if you're interested, hehe). Cops that are pointing the radar in your direction are easier to pick up in hilly conditions, and the "smart" ones will point it away from you, but you'll usually see them before you get infront of them, or you can pick up the signal off of vehicles that have already passed them.

Ranger_X: Of course cheap crap doesn't work reliably. Do you expect your old CPU which youve overclocked way out of its stable range to work reliaby? Of course not. If you wanted the CPU to work reliably at that way overclocked speed, you woulda bought one that was rated at that speed. But this forum is about hot deals - and a cheap radar detector is *NOT* a hot deal. The Escort Passport 7500 is a hot deal - even though its not on sale - because it will save you from getting a ticket if you use it wisely. Your correct in the statement that it won't pick up radar/laser till its pointed and turned on. But radar (and to a smaller degree, laser) bounces off of cars travelling ahead of you. This is the principle behind a radar detector, to pick up the bounced signals. Well that's enough for my rant - get the Passport!
