Nice P4 HSF shootout

That was a good review. I would have liked to have seen how the SwiftTech performed under those conditions.

Nice. But I wish they would've included the retail heatsink as a baseline. And maybe the Sunflower, since it seems to be the most popular.

Definitely a big mistake not to include the stock hs/f and I would have liked to have seen my Vantec AeroFlow in there as well, still a nice little review of the ones covered though, thanx Thugs 🙂

I just picked up a TT P4 Spark 7 and it's a really nice HSF. I lapped the bottom w/ 600 grit for about 10 min to make it flat, and it seems to be a nice improvement over the AX478 w/ Panaflo I was using.

Yep...🙂

I really would like to know how the Swifty measures up to the Alpha...we already know the mounting is inferior, but I'd like to know how the temps fair...🙂

Seriously, the Alpha PAL8942 is hands down the best air cooling heatsink i've ever used. In combination with AS3 and a YS tech 80mm variable, i've been able to drop cpu temps from (idle/load) 42C/59C to an incredible 32C/45C overclocked to 2.88ghz! It's a bit on the pricey side, but i don't regret one penny. Thanks to ChampionatTufshop, OulOat and RalfHutter for helping me choose a combo 🙂

Edit: I just checked temps again with prime95. It seems that the AS3 has 'set' and now my temps are 28C/41C now. Amazing! (I might mention, also, that it is especially cold this morning.)

Yep - thanks for the link Thugs. Nice review and once again confirms my 8942 for air cooling.
I would like to have seen the comparison to the stock heatsink, also though.

I read the review and liked it. But that was it... tried scoping out the rest of their site but they use a proprietary html editor and pages do not display properly with Mozilla. Not to mention the layout while trying to read the review pages bit the bullet also.

I prefer the bolting mechanism of the Swiftech above the Alpha. I also feel that the build quality of the Swiftech is better overall. However, for a price/performance heatsink, I would definitely go with the Vantec AeroFlow.

kinda an OT question,

Is the retail HSF on P4 Socket 478s the same for all of their processors? or are they better as you go up in CPU ?
for example, if I buy a retail HSF that was with a 2.4b CPU and I dump that for an alpha, can I use that one my 1.6a and get better cooling then the retail 1.6a one ? Basically are retail HSF's interchangeable?

I am in the market for another hs/fan combo.

I second that. I spent almost the whole day while not on the phone
with a customer trying to figure out which one to choose, since both
of them have great reviews.

Here's a review that compares the SLK900 with the Alpha 8942T along with 3 other fans. The price of the SLK900 seems to range in $50-55, but it will cost more when add a fan and shipping, so wouldn't it be better to just spend that extra $60+ on a P4 2.66B instead and have a higher change of running at 3ghz?

would there even be a noticeable difference in running at 18x167 using the 2.4b over 20x150 using a 2.66b? if not, wouldn't it make more sense to get the 2.66b and use the retail hs and have a better chance of getting 3.1ghz running 20x155?
