Nice picture. Nice cat.

How did you set up the shot, and why did you use the self-timer?

Was it because of the long exposure (1/25)?

i used an s230, manual settings, -1.25 exposure (i don't know how this translates to msec) and no flash. i used a yellowish desk lamp off to the right.

hmm, i never mentioned using the timer, but i did actually. but i used it for the purpose that you guessed. i didn't use a tripod - i just put the camera on top of a stack of books. when i depressed the shutter the camera would move slightly and occasionally give me a blurry pic. the timer gave a few extra seconds to allow the camera to stabilize on the books so that i could get a decent shot.

edit: so the -1.25 setting means 1/25 seconds?

so the -1.25 setting means 1/25 seconds?

No. The -1.25 actually means that the camera underexposes by 1.25 stops from it's meter reading. Essentially, you told the camera to make the picture darker than it would have done on its own. In this case, this was necessary, because the camera would be confused by the very dark background.

1/25 second (40 ms) was the shutter speed.

This and lots more information is recorded in the image file (that's how I knew you used the self-timer). Zoombrowser will show it.
