I find these claims interesting, but who knows who these people are - were they there and heard what was said or are they just repeating what Williams' father said.

I have yet to see it from any reliable source, but, that being said, since I was not there and you have presented at least a colorable argument that racial slurs were used, I will concede that it was possible. (I guess out of 17,000 people, I can see there being a few who could have said something inappropriate.)

I would still like to see it confirmed by a reliable third party or a personal review of the videotape.

bottom line is there are a handful of wrongs about this whole incident.

wrong #1 - fans booing during & after the match

wrong #2 - even Serena's opponent, Kim Clijsters (a Belgian), was quoted as saying, "The crowd was very loud, even when she missed a first serve they were clapping."

wrong #3 - did the referee or Indian Wells rep even try to prevent the crowd for their unspectator-like behavior.....because c'mon, this is tennis!.........?quiet please?

wrong #4 - Richard Williams is a self-proclaimed racist. his recent statement about Austin & Evert is inexcusably appalling. if anything, he should fined for his remarks.

wrong #5 - the incident was what, 7 years ago? the Williams camp needs to get over it and Indian Wells needs to step up to the plate if it happens again.

u're right about the 3 links i shared. the first one was more or less the blogger's impression that the jeers were racially motivated while watching the match on ESPN. the 2nd article was The Williamses claim. the last link, sounds like Akesher was also in attendance and heard the slurs. i have to say this MotionMan....u're a lawyer, right?....how many atrocious incidents occur between 2 ppl where there weren't any witnesses present? does that mean the incident in question didn't happen? while i do think the race card gets played probably more than it should sometimes, i do know that racist events do occur. as far as this specific event, more than anything (so moreso whether or not racial epithets were said), i'm stuck on whether or not the ref/Indian Wells even tried to reprimand the crowd.

serena williams is super hot. i'm dead serious. however her and her sister both do not care enough about tennis to advance the sport itself. there's been numerous articles written about how serena is concerned about her fashion line and acting. James Blake, Arthur Ashe are two black tennis players that have gotten the utmost respect from the tennis community. If you act poorly, the response to you will be poor.

btw don't question my taste in women but my top 3 list is hillary, serena, and danielle lloyd.

as i'm admitted before, when i used to watch tennis on TV, the ref would stop any ruckus before play. i've been to other sporting events where boos was almost a given to utter against opponents.

i don't really know what transpired that fateful day some 7 years ago, other than boos (as confirmed by quite a few articles). everything else is speculation. and honestly, i'm just happy Serena found the mental fortitude to win the match.
