HP ZR2740w - High Resolution IPS that Doesn't Break the Bank

Just read this review. Even with some drawbacks noted in the review, seems like a really nice monitor. Best part is that it is available for $633 shipped!

HP ZR2740w
2560x1440
LED backlit
DisplayPort and Dual Link DVI inputs
8-bit IPS panel

If I wasn't already typing this post while looking at a 30" Samsung 305T Plus, I would consider this new HP monitor.

wow looks like it has pretty decent ergonomics to it, wasn't really expecting that for how relatively inexpensive it is

only area it seems to be lacking just from looking at the pictures is lack of inputs, of which it certainly has more than enough for the average computer user

One good thing the new Ipad is doing for the consumer, is drawing attention to higher resolution = better. A question many may have never considered, but now they will at least maybe ask why it's better. Because they heard how wonderful the new Ipad is VS the older model etc.
I would have to see this model or any I buy, in person. As much as some hate glossy monitors, some anti-glare screens are also distracting to me.

Did you just compare a tablet to a desktop monitor? /boggles the mind.

Compare one product's LCD display with another product's LCD display? Unthinkable!

Next thing you know people will be comparing Samsung Plasma TVs with LG LCD TVs, different technology AND brand. This is madness!

Been a lot of buzz about these on the internet lately, check out the thread on OCN for more information. I've been really tempted to get one and upgrade from my 23" 1080p display. 27" just seems way too big for a desktop monitor, though, it'd be nice if you could find higher resolutions like 2560x1600 and 2560x1440 in monitors smaller than 27". Then again 23" seemed huge when I upgraded from my 17" monitor, but I got used to it.

Without an OSD, how do you calibrate it? What if you want to use it with an xbox or something? Not sure how I feel about per-device calibration, or even worse if you dual boot... (unless I'm mistaken)

Though the HP would have an actual warranty. I can just imagine how much a Catleap or Shimian etc. would cost to ship back (if indeed there were a problem,) without the ability to depend on S. Korean subsidies. :)

I also believe that tablet demand has driven down costs for IPS panels and spurred innovation. Finally some decent IPS 2560x1440 panels within reach of the average consumer. Nice.

Do a search for Achieva Shimian QH270 $400 IPS 2560x1440 if you're on a budget. Same thing much cheaper.

I prefer 4:3 myself as 90% of what I do is formatted for more vertical than horizontal pixels leaving blanks right and left. But in 27 your kinda screwed. Even high end PA271W comes 16x9.:(

You need to read the review.

There is no HDMI on this monitor its not for consoles.

And the target market is professional so you would be expected to have a hardware calibrator available.

I picked up a spyder 3 express last year for like $120 and it was worth it. I hate using uncalibrated monitors now.

Thats not the same these are korean using the LG 270wq1 panel and go for $250 in Korea

I heard from a fairly reliable source these Chinese monitors use LG panels. I just haven't bothered contacting the seller. And these A- panels don't sell for $250, from what I read, the actual monitors sell for $220-230USD in S. Korea. In fact, you can buy A grade panels on eBay for $200.

My main point was that I have a feeling the market still has room to bottom.

I want one but it not worth it just for starcraft 2 :(

Though my 16:10 monitor apparently doesn't give me the most viewing area...

I agree with you both.

However with this 27' monitor I don't mind 1440 vertical cause its much better than 1080p so at this price point and size 16:9 would be acceptable. Anything bigger or smaller has to be 16:10 for me.

Bah, 50% more screen area than my 1680x1050 2209wa but over 100% more pixels = eyestrain fail.

Actually you may be on to something.

I've read of people with these 27` 1440 screens that complain about the pixel pitch being too small.

I have 2 primary usage monitors: that 1680x1050 22" screen has a large pitch, but my office monitor is 1920x1080 21.6". Without doing the math, I'd say that 2560x1440 27"is probably pretty close to my office monitor. I run my browser at 125% on the work monitor, it's just too hard on my eyes otherwise.

Still too expensive. 1600p should be as cheap as 1080p is now.

Not enough market. 2560x1440 is easier/cheaper to make. sadly, that is probably the wave of the future.

So we basically have to wait for apple to release more high res devices so the idiot mass mass market and can show there is interest before they monitor manufacturers decide to make a move.

Pretty F***** sad!
