edit If I can't find a good used one then it seems i'll go with the roland cube or that behringer that a couple people suggested. However on amazon there are some amps by Crate that are pretty inexpensive seems I could get a 25W or so for under $100.... but do crate amps suck? Anyone else wanna chime in? I'm not going to be performing with this amp, just playing and practicing along side a roommate who has drums.

im on a serious budget want to spend less than 100 (there's no way i can currently go more than 100 bux)

suggestion?

i like to play mainly rock

i need something that will have good volume (this will be my first "real" amp i have a 5watt practice amp right now that i got at a yard sale)

but i dont need people a mile away to hear it....

$50 used would be fantastic if that's possible lol

im looking on ebay right now for a used one..

another vote for the cube 15, and if possible, get a Micro cube for $125. It's 2 watts, but it's madly loud. It can almost damage your ears. One of my friends brought it to youth group a few days ago to play on, dayum the whole gym was filled with sound so loud you almost had to plug your ears, and that was on batterys.

EDIT: Did i mention the micro cube has mad effects too?

afaik the cube and the micro cube both have mad effects - the micro cube just has the added benefit of running off of bateries.

ah. ok.

Yea. You pay a large premium for that portability, ironically.

classifieds, try craigslist. you can't really buy an amp that can keep up with a drumset for $100, all you'll end up with is a piece of crap that you will get rid of later. you need at least 60 watts or so. you really should just save up a bit, once you are in the 200 to 300 range you can get something good.

I've got this amp and it's been great for me. I've heard great things about the roland cube 15 too.

If he's going to be playing live, he'll need more that $100 used or not. If it's just for practice, you can dampen acoustic drums. A lot of people are going with electronic drums now (Yamaha has a couple of sets that are really good). If that's the case, you can control the volume.

but i dont need people a mile away to hear it....

I don't think he want's to use this to play live though.

Going used would definitely get you a better amp for the price. Providing its been taken decent care of, most solid state amps last 10 years or more before the transistors and components break. I started a co-op and chatted with a guy I work with.. turns out he plays a lot of guitar and bass and when I mentioned wanting a new guitar and amp he said he had an amp he'd sell. Its a Carvin SX-100D (12" speaker, 100W) that I got for $175. The slightly newer model of that one sells from Carvin for around $350 + tax/shipping. Then a month later or so I got his Boss DS-2 distortion pedal + AC adapter + remote toggle switch for $40. I'm quite happy with both purchases (he really takes care of his stuff) and it ends up saving me money for a good guitar.

SO I'm not sure how you run across good, used purchases, but definitely keep your eyes open. As someone who doesnt have much of a budget or isnt a hardcore enthusiast, I don't see any reason to not try and get a used amp.

edit: The Carvin I got is quite similar to my old Peavey Bandit 112. Same speaker size, smilar power and sound. I practice at volume 1 or so as I did on the Peavey. I played with bass, vocals, and drums with the Peavey for a while and it was plenty loud enough. I would say an amp with a 10" speaker and 50 W or so of power would be good enough to play with drums but thats just a guess.
