Lol, nah man look around some more. For that your paying $1/Gb where as you should be paying about $0.50 - $0.75 per Gb. I know that doesn't sound like your spending all that much more, but if you add it up you'll see the difference. I found a 250Gb portable HDD the other day for $175.

Buy the enclosure separately from the drive. That will not only give you more flexibility, but it could wind up being cheaper if you find a good drive deal. How are you guys connected? 802.11g? 802.11b? 10/100 ethernet? Gigabit?

He makes a good point. Here is one that I use. It works fairly well as a NAS or USB connected device.

NuAlphaMan that NAS box looks interesting at that price, but you say it works "fairly" well, what do you not like about it? How fast is it? I had the WD Netcenter and it was excruciatingly slow, so I returned it, now I am looking for another.

Consumer NAS boxes are all slow until you spend a lot more money. The Thecus 5200 for example starts to approach the performance of a DIY NAS server (it has a 600 MHz Celeron M). Most others are what I call "fakegigabit" at best. Maybe in a year or so they'll get better.
