nic works but doesn't?

I have done a lot of work trying to install a nic on a Iwill kk266 mb. I have verified that the nic works on another computer and I have tried different nic in the kk266 computer. So here is the problem:

The card installs correctly and is working according to the device manager.
I can release and renew the IP address
I can ping the router and the other computer on the router successfully
I CAN'T access the internet? and yes TCP/IP and IE are set up properly.
I have changed pci slots, removed all other pci cards, and even checked for any IRQ conflicts.
The diagnostics program won't pass the internal loopback test.
When I shut off the computer, the lights on the router are still on showing activity?
I have even upgraded the bios, reinstalled win98se, and played with parameters in the bios, but nothing works.

Any suggestions would be great as to what to try next except drop kicking the mb out the window and getting a new mb.

I'm not a guru, but I had a similar (not exact) problem. I forced the NIC to operate at 10Mb/s instead of letting it autonegiotiate. This cleared up my problem. It might help yours...........Good luck.

I actually tried that and it didn't work either.

I can ping my ISP but couldn't ping cisco. Another question is I can network the two computers, ie see them in network neighborhood. Can I share an internet connection instead? How would I go about setting it up?

it sounds like you don't have any name resolution. In your routers setup page there should be something like "send DNS servers" or whatever. Your router needs to provide via DHCP some DNS servers the your computers.

You can check by pinging www.cisco.com - if it resolves to an address than you have good DNS, if it doesn't then you don't. You can also check with the command "ipconfig /all" and see if any DNS servers are listed.

Yeah, it doesn't resolve www.cisco.com. I will check the DNS part on the router but I think that is set up. If it wasn't, would the other computer be able to connect?

well, its one step closer to solving your problem. Without name resolution you're not gonna do much. 🙂

here's the ip address for the site if you wish to ping by IP alone. If that works then you know you have good internet connectivity and can focus on name resolution.

F:\>ping www.cisco.com

Pinging www.cisco.com [198.133.219.25] with 32 bytes of data:

Ok, so I can't www.cisco.com with the iwill comp. I can communicate with other computers and ping the ISP. The other computer can surf the net and ping cisco no problem so the problem can't be the router or the ISP. A laptop hooked up to the router works also. Going directly from the nic to the cable modem doesn't give any different results either. Tried a third nic and stil the same thing.

Now, there is some IBM client As400 software installed on the computer. I am going to uninstall it but would this have any affect that anybody knows of? Or is it still a compatibility issue with the nic and the mb?

NIC & MB are fine, this is strictly an OS problem.

Just to kick start it, add NetBeui protocol, after it starts communicating properly you can remove it. Sometimes the Stack sets up wrong by the order that it is built.

I believe I have NetBeui already installed. How do I know if it is communicating properly?

I tried pinging www.cisco.com and it was unable to resolve host name but when I pinged the IP address, it worked. What does that mean?

Sounds like you have a DNS name in your setup that doesn't work. make sure there is no DNS set, should be set to Disable DNS

Tried disable, and let the router use DHCP to assign them but doesn't matter, or should I disable the router also?

Try this...
Get the DNS ip address off the working computer and manually inputing them in the non working computer. This should solve your DNS issuses.
