nic works but doesn't?

I have done a lot of work trying to install a nic on a Iwill kk266 mb. I have verified that the nic works on another computer and I have tried different nic in the kk266 computer. So here is the problem:

The card installs correctly and is working according to the device manager.
I can release and renew the IP address
I can ping the router and the other computer on the router successfully
I CAN'T access the internet? and yes TCP/IP and IE are set up properly.
I have changed pci slots, removed all other pci cards, and even checked for any IRQ conflicts.
The diagnostics program won't pass the internal loopback test.
When I shut off the computer, the lights on the router are still on showing activity?
I have even upgraded the bios, reinstalled win98se, and played with parameters in the bios, but nothing works.

Any suggestions would be great as to what to try next except drop kicking the mb out the window and getting a new mb.

(ie. ping your ISP)

If you can't, try resetting the router.

I will try that but if I can't ping my ISP what would that mean? Or if I can?

Resetting the router doesn't account that the loopback test failed. Sounds to me like a compatability problem with the nic and mb. Before you throw the mb I would try a different brand nic in it.

I tried that already and it failed also. Here is another interesting thing. I can network the two computers and ping my ISP. Is there anyway to do an internet connection sharing? I know this is a half-assed way of doing it but wouldn't that work also?

If you can ping the router, I'm inclined to think there's nothing wrong with the mobo or the nic. If you can network to the other computer, the mobo and nic are working. Something about the router isn't allowing you to go through it.

Another thing to check -- do you have any proxies setup?

Before you kick the Iwill kk266 mobo out the window, let me know. I might be interested in "helping you out" by taking it off your hands. That's a great mobo!

As for failing the loopback did you try to just ping 127.0.0.1? Also I would remove the router for a test and see if you can surf the web etc. while connected directly to the cable modem. If that works you at least know it's something in the config of your router.

ive had problems with one of ethernet cables having a lose wire working, but having 1 lose wire or something like that one of my buddies came over and disected the cable put new ends on it and then everything worked fine... i dunno.

Check the router's settings, and find the IP address - not the one for the internal network (likely something 192.168.xxx.xxx), but the one for the modem itself. Ping that. Then ping the Gateway - it should be similar to the modem's IP address, but with 1 as the last digit; at least, that's how they set up the cable network here. Then try pinging one of the listed DNS servers. If it fails at any of these steps, list where it fails to establish contact. If it can't contact the modem, the problem is between the router and modem; if it can't ping the gateway, the problem is probably outside the house somewhere, and is a problem with the cable network - same applies if it can't contact any DNS servers.
