NIC with onboard processing

I think it's a safe assumption that most end-user NICs don't have CPU's onboard. My friend just pick up a NIC with an onboard CPU, 1 Gbp/s. Cost him some money though.
 
i got some intel pro/100, some intel gigabit adapater, broadcom gigabit adapter.. some 3com with that parallel processing ?

Is onboard nic that much better ?
 
What I read off the box of his NIC was that the onboard CPU allows for "load management". I couldn't tell you what specifically that means in terms of performance or even any other advantages it may offer.
