I can't view webpages, I get the cannot conect to server error.

Have a cable modem, was connected by usb. Installed a NIC in the computer, and now I can't view webpages
The card gets the DHCP information, and I can ping by ip, but not by DNS

I tried using a linksys router, but I can't even view the admin wepage

I've tried putting the modem back to the usb, and I still can't view them
I do get an ip address though. and can ping. I've tried going all the way back to IE4, and up to IE6, same thing

it's the only computer on the network, I had to go to a friends computer to try and find help
I tried out the router here, but it works fine. tried doing ethernet straight to the modem too...

since I can't access the router admin page (http://192.168.1.1) I'm thinking it's something wrong with the compter, as I can access it here.
the wierd thing is I can ping, but only to IP addresses, however I can't even connect to a website by ip

I've tried multiple NICs, but like I said I can't even use the modem through USB anymore

Have you tried to see if email works, or instant messaging programs?

Could be its only IE thats messed up. If email etc works and you cant view pages then go through below instructions to fix it.

Delete these registry keys:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VXD\AFVXD

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VXD\DHCP

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VXD\MSTCP

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VXD\Winsock

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VXD\Winsock2

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\WinSock2

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\RemoteAccess
\Authentication\SMM_Files

Then remove your entire network stack. Restart computer.

Upon restart the computer should detect your network card.. install it. Then go into network stack and make sure tcp/ip is installed (when tcp/ip is reinstalled it rebuilds those registry keys) and configure your network.

Try it out again.

I know it's not IE, also tried installing Netscape, and email doesn't work. I can only ping some hosts on the internet by ip...I'll try those keys.

The registry keys A.K.A. detailed should fix the problem. In fact, you can probably fix it by only removing the winsock keys, then removing EVERYTHING from your network properties, and rebooting. Corrupt winsock file cause this problem.
