Nic can't do 100Mbps/full duplex

I have 4 computers on a network with a wired router and a switch in the basement. The router and the switch are capable of 10/100 full duplex.

All computers are running fine except for mine, a fifth computer in my bedroom, shows the "network cable is unplugged" icon.

When I switch to 10Mbps half duplex I get connected and everything is fine and my internet works.

However I need to use 100/full duplex because moving files over the network is slow. But when I switch to 100/full duplex I disconnect again.

I have tried reinstalling windows and reinstalling all drivers. My computer is about a year old and I am using the Marvel Gigabit Integrated NIC on my DFI board.

I have the latest firmware for all hardware.

The other 4 computers are using different NICs.

I take it that the board doesn't have a second NV connection?

it sounds like the cable is defective. have you tried using a nic card to see if it's reproducable where the 5th machine is?

Gigabit nic's use all 4 pairs of wires in a network cable. From what I have seen, it is much more sensitive to cable problems that are not apparent to most basic cable testers. I'd agree to try a different cable.

I also wonder why you are you forcing 100 full duplex? Usually if you are going to do this successfully, the switch on the other end needs to be able to have it ports manually set to full duplex as well. I've had problems getting a unmanaged auto detect switch to accept a forced full duplex connection from whatever device is on the other end. In those cases I've had to set the network card back to auto detect.

I'm not sure what you mean my NV connection.

I have already tried using the second integrated NIC on my board and it still didn't work, I also used a usb link sys NIC that was just 10/100 and it also didn't work.

I have already tried replacing the Ethernet cable going from my wall jack and into my computer, but I have not tried changing the cable coming from the switch/router. So perhaps that cable is defective?

As for forcing 100/full duplex:

When I set to auto sense I am able to connect with 100mbps I can tell if it's full or half duplex, but in any case I will lose my internet connection after a certain amount of time (the connection monitor icon indicates I still have a network connection though.)

are the other 4 pc's on the network desktops or are any of them laptops? I would suggest try hooking up one that can connect to the jack the 5th machine is on and see if it reproduces the same error. that would be a logical 1st step.

Good idea, one of them is a laptop so I can test it out.
