I know lots of people usa cheap noname NICs and everything well, but on the other hand, people do go and buy Intel or 3Com for much more, why?
what should i get? most of the people i know buy $13 cards whcih windows recongnizes as "RealTek" cards.

i dont know if they work in Linux (i dont have it either, but it would be nice be be linux compatible)

what are the differences? what problems might accour?

TIA,

I personally like intel nics but on the other hand I haven't really heard anything bad about the "cheapies" with the realtek chips. Really the only reason I use the intel nics though is cause work gets em for free so I usually "borrow" a couple

The Realtek cards are supported under Linux. However, not all cards based on the Realtek chip are created equal. For example, the Linksys ones are very nice (I believe they use Realtek), but the D-Link are one of the worst performers with the same chip.

Anyway, the Intel/3Coms aren't much much more dollars than the cheapies. I think I paid $35 for my Intel NIC as opposed to $10 for my cheapy Linksys. %-wise, it's a big difference, but in reality $25 isn't a whole lot these days.

Benchmarks might be able to tell the difference between the 2, but I can't from everyday use so I would always get the cheapy ones from now on.

Whenever I've bought on price alone, I've regretted it later. Used some cheap aopen nic's for first home network and it was a learning experience. With some experience, cheap can work but I dont regret my 3com nics, almost self installed and fully supported. I got them used for the same price as the new cheap ones. They dont wear out.

well i anderstand i wont have ny problems with a 3Com or an Intel, but would i have any problems with anoname card?
what are the possible difficulties? i know windows just installs them by itself (seen it), so what can happen? they brake? malfunction? word slower? unsupported by some weird OSs? (i understand linux works with them)

Don't get a no name NIC. The 100MBIT and 10MBIT no name NICs will perform as 30MBIT and 3MBIT respectively. Netgear has really cheap 100/10MBIT cards that are really good.

Linksys probably makes the best of the cheapest. If you wanted to get "no name" I'd get linksys.

yes Linksys is a good one if you don't want to go with Intel or 3Com. I use both of my systems with it. I still have 2 of them brand new as well. If you are still looking for one, PM me... cause I don't need the 2 of them right now.

yeah i have several of the fa310tx netgear cards running on an fs105 switch and been extremely happy with it. their tech support was top notch and were extremely quick to fix my problems/answer questions. though lately i have heard that tech support is horrible. very very long wait times. caveat empor (sp).

Please, unless you want to be disapointed don't get a no name NIC. It's not worth saving $10, the Netgear FA312 is dirty cheap and it's one of the best performers. Infact they were the fastest ones in a comparison with all the other top NICs. However, they are not the best since 3COM's and Intel's products offer less CPU usage, Intel's being the ones with the least.

The Linksys cards are awesome! Every guy in the computer dept. at the Best Buy I work at swears by them. They are dirt cheap also. We have them for like $10 after rebates.
