Judging by the reviews, you would think that 2k9 is an abomination and 09 is a masterpiece. Unfortunately, the demos for both games fail to highlight the strengths/weaknesses in the titles.

Does anyone have either of these games? Thoughts, comments? I've always loved the 2k series (2k7 is the last hockey title I bought) and I'm quite comfortable with the controls, but every review I read says the AI is rather suspect, and than EA's release is one of the best sports games this decade.
 
I love NHL08's use of the analog sticks for shooting. 09 only improved upon that feature and included an MMO mode where you build up one player. However if you like the NHL2K series in general you'd probably enjoy 2K9...
 
Well I picked up EA's title. I've always enjoyed 2k's flavor of hockey, but I couldn't get past the fact that every single review agreed that EA's release was the title to get.

I'm having a heck of a time adapting to the controls, but it will come. One thing that has disappointed me, though, is the game doesn't do a very good job of capturing the energy found in most hockey arenas.
 
I'm definitely in the minority. I really dislike the EA game....the moves the puck carrier can make are just too arcadish. Especially right in front of your net. I actually returned the EA game hours after I bought it (they were cool to give me a full trade at GS) and have enjoyed 2k9 quite a bit more.
 
I'm a big fan of EA's new control scheme. I started with NHL '08 and found goal scoring to be much more satisfying with the right stick than by pressing X or A. The flow of the game just feels more real.

The Be-A-Pro mode in '09 is a fun new way to play, in my opinion. It's satisfying getting your minutes and capitalizing on the time you have on the ice. I haven't tried any other mode, yet, but Be A Pro is holding my attention when I fire up the game.

Just in case you didn't know - you can change the settings so that you're always on the ice and don't fatigue. I got kind of bored watching my teammates suck it up while I my line was on the bench taking a breather.
 
A little off topic. I just got this game yesterday, anyone has suggestions for gameplay settings? Or is superstar difficulty ok for goals, hits, etc? Thanks.
 
Hit totals will never be right in the game, but superstar and 8 minutes work fine for me.
Simming gets all screwed up at higher levels and longer periods, but if you play every game you'll be fine. I LOVE Be a Pro, amazing game mode. Can't imagine what the MLB game on PS3 would be like.

Thanks Red Rooster. I don't really care about the hits, just want the score to be realistic.

I'd like to try online, is there a way to find someone with the same skill level aka "noob"?

Be A Pro mode in NHL 09 is a blast. So satisfying scoring or assisting goals as your created player. I'm not even one season through it, so I don't know what the playoffs will be like, or the offseason (contracts, free agency, trades, etc). I haven't played any other mode than this one.

The downside is that your defense sucks when your team pulls the goalie, and there is no fore- or back-checking by the CPU. Nobody finishes their checks, which kills me! Come to think of it, nobody really checks, period. They just let the opposition into the zone without really harassing them. The CPU's stick handling ability is...interesting, to say the least. But when you're on the ice, it's fun.

OT: For those that have a PS3, the "Be A Pro" mode, Road To The Show, in MLB '08 is absolutely addicting, at least to me it is. If you can find this at a low price, it should be a no brainer (assuming you like baseball). MLB '09 is due in a couple of months, which I can't wait for.

Its weird, the 2k series was miles ahead there from 2k5-2k7, then for 08 and 09, EA's is miles ahead. I don't know if 2k got lazy, or EA woke up, or maybe a combo of both.

I loved the 2k games before 8 and 9, but last year and this year I played EA 08 and 09 only.

I think since there was major competition for EA with the 2k games they really stepped it up. They don't have that competition in many other sports so they don't need to try as hard there.
