Does anyone know what the long term implications are? edit - i.e. if the players sign as free agents, would they be subject to the 'no free agency til you're 31' rule, or would they avoid that BS.

Breaking the young player indenturing system would actually reduce player costs in the long run; the owners could get what they want more easily from a free market then from what they think they want.

Well they could always hold off until next summer and have a very talent-rich draft. That'll bring back some interest.

very little implications. Not many of the players that are drafted play right away. It's like the baseball draft. They are drafting for the rights to the player. most of the players play in Juniors or the minor leagues for a while before even putting on an NHL uniform.

i say screw em....i liked the NHL but i dont miss it being gone...i can go watch my local college coed teams play at the ice rink for a helluva lot cheaper...a LOT closer...and with much more action and interaction with the players. And these are guys getting paid NOTHING. I hope these guys get nothing, end up with nothing, and they start a real league where players are there to PLAY and not to bitch and moan about how much they are being payed

hopefully these kids not being drafted are able to make it elsewhere...get out of the US to play hockey and go to countries where the game isn't just some capitalist thing.

But players who are signed, won't have been drafted, and teams will want to sign them as free agents. So I'm interested in the implications for later free agency - if you don't come in through the draft, you don't have to sign a contract that subjects you to restricted free agency, right?

I see what you are saying now, and agree with you. But the draft is only cancelled this year. It isn't cancelled for all future years, so it really won't affect the long term that much.

Not unless they're locked out next year too. :p

so I finally see Crosby play a full game (outside of WJCs) and he is held completely pointless... his 37-game point scoring streak comes to an end...

there is going to be one huge draft year when they start playing again. I feel bad for the potential #1 the would have been the year after.......... lost money to him.

Cheers,
Aquaman

isn't there a rookie salary cap anyway ? (or was) Or do you mean there's a bonus for being #1 ?

:(
Sidney Crosby:
"All of us had been looking forward to having our names called in Ottawa [...] Unfortunately this is something that is out of our control."

^ arguably the best prospect in years, and NO draft. :|

The NHL said it is committed to playing hockey next season, with or without a labor agreement. The use of replacement players already has been discussed.
So we WILL have SOME form of hockey next year. That means the pools will be in effect again and I'll just spend all my time analyzing player stats again. :) *bliss*

Hopefully it doesn't have to come to that! I believe the NFL used replacement players in 1995 or whenever their stoppage was.

I absoutely 100% agree. The big difference between college, minors and the NHL is the skill of the goalie. I find college hockey more interesting because of more scoring and no fighting.

i could watch a hockey game of almost any level live. our local junior hockey is bar none some of the best live hockey you can see - these kids (the oldest being maybe 19-21 age range) work pretty damn hard every shift. it's brutally fast and the skill is just ridiculous. there is actually quite a bit of the rough stuff though. however even some of the minor hockey teams in the area provide some good watching, especially once they get into the playoffs.

Crosby's goal was to play in Europe if there was no draft, he needs to move out of the Q if he plans to make his millions like his daddy wants him to.
Unfortunately for him the Q owns the rights to him until he turns 20, so he wont be going anywhere .

NHL
The NHL Entry Draft, scheduled for Ottawa in June, was cancelled earlier this year. Several NHL people at the IIHF World Hockey Championship believe Bettman will convince the board of governors to adopt a lottery system for the draft that will be based on how teams finished over the course of the last three years. The concept features a relatively simple system involving bingo balls and whether or not your team has been making or missing the playoffs lately. If you've missed the playoffs three times in the last three years, you get three balls in the bingo machine. That's Columbus, Buffalo, Atlanta, Florida, Pittsburgh and the New York Rangers. If you've missed the playoffs twice, you get two balls. That's Edmonton, Calgary, Carolina, Chicago, Nashville, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Washington, Minnesota and Anaheim. Everybody else gets one ball. Total: 52 balls. Your number rolls out first and ... BINGO! Sidney Crosby is yours.
-- Edmonton Sun

So now it appears anyone has a shot at Sidney Crosby.....
