Yeah I originally I didn't think it was any good, but it is a small improvement over NHL 06. Still, I remember playing a ton of NHL 04, and the graphics were just as good and almost all useful features were there, so as expected from EA there hasn't been much of a change in 3 years, but not much reason to go back. But I always slammed people into the boards and broke the glass in '04. I've never seen it in NHL 06 or 07! WTH? I guess the best thing about NHL 07 over NHL 06 is the right analog stick for passing. It gives a bit better feel and involvement to be able to flick the stick in the direction to pass (albeit a minor feature), plus the NHL 06 implementation of the right analog stick was crap. Anyway, a couple of things about NHL 07...
-I don't seem to have a button to hook people. In NHL 04, if I was a little bit away chasing someone and he was about to shoot, I could reach out my stick and hook him, possibly risking a penalty, but a good way to stop them. Can't seem to do it in 07
-The dive button on defense is the same as the wrist shoot on offense. So I've noticed I tend to hit that button multiple times when shooting, but after it registers the shot, my guy dives to the ground and is out of the play for a few seconds while he lays there... don't remember that in the other NHL games.
-Penalties are iffy. I mean I have them turned up like ~40%, some games there is way way to damn many. Either my AI team or the opposing AI team loves to high stick or hook the hell out of people. These games we are shorthanded, even down to 3 guys, most of the game. But if you turn down the penalties another level, there is hardly any. And even at the level I'm at, other games there is hardly any penalties!
Other than that, only a few other minor things, but overall I have a lot of fun with 07. It's marginally better than 06, which I found marginally better than 04, but apearantly from reviews, 06/07 should be much better than 04, but that was a while ago so maybe I didn't remember everything.
In my current season, I often traded away 2-3 sh*tty guys (the guys that are like backups and rated ~60, I call them "generics". Sometimes they'd not accept 3 generics for one better guy on their team, so I try 2 generics and they take it, lol) for one better guy from some team. Then I signed a bunch of the highest rated free agents since there didnt seem to be any limit outside of 37 max players on the team. So over the course of the season, I always tried trading away my generic/suckey guys for better guys, then did the same with them + free agents, so in the playoffs now I have a pretty sweet team. The lowest rated guys are like 80 or higher. 😀
